5205-S703: "a problem with the cooling system has been detected. Please turn off...

Hello, I got an toshiba 5205-S703.

I bought this laptop 3 years ago. I run linux and leave the notebook powered on 24x7. From time to time the cooler (which runs through magnet levitation), gets dry and stops running. When this happen, the laptop starts to overheat easily when running programs which use 100% cpu or graphic intensive applications, the laptop starts to get hot. Normally when the cpu temperature gets over 84C the laptop power off.

So I have to disassemble the laptop and lubrificate the cooler. This solves the problem for 3 to 4 months when the cooler starts to get dry again.

The problem is that this time, Ive I insisted keep using the laptop when the cooler was too dry. So in linux the cpu started to get very slow, I didnt discovered what was causing that.

So, I restarted the 5205-S703 into windows. It appeared a message:

"Warning: A problem with the cooling system has been detected.
Please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service."
[ OK ]

And the cpu get very slow, like it was in linux. I checked the cooler, it was stopped.

So I, disassembled the notebook and lubrificate the cooler. I reassembled the CPU. But this time the cooler do not start. I ordered a new cooler, but I'm afraid that something could have happened with my motherboard or my CPU.

My questions are:
1- Did anybody already seen this error message? what do you have to replace?
2- Do replacing my cooler will solve the problem?
3- Is there a way to know if the problem is only the cooler or if the problem is another part?
4- Anybody knows a good (or any) source for toshiba OEM parts through the internet?

NOTE: Any experiences on this will be much appreciated. I didnt take the laptop to toshiba service cause here in Brazil we just can't trust service suppliers. They take your parts that are working and replace with worst parts. So I prefer doing anything by myself.

thanks in advance.

No offence, but don't you think you should have done something when the CPU slowed down adn you started getting all these error messages? That seem kind of stupid to me.

>> 1- Did anybody already seen this error message? what do you have to replace?
The cooler and/or cpu?!

>> 2- Do replacing my cooler will solve the problem?
If the CPU isn't burned out already, probaly.

>> 3- Is there a way to know if the problem is only the cooler or if the problem is another part?
?!?!?!??!

where's the problem?!

Yeah, that was stupid.

The question now is, how to know if the problem is:
- just the cooler;
- the cpu (processor);
- the motherboard (video card);

any ideas?

Does the error message permits know if the problem is just the cooler?

Anybody has a Pentium4 2.2ghz mobile processor to sell?

sounds like your fan's ball bearings have worn out.

No amount of lube will fix that.

Take it in and have it replaced

no, this cooler (blower) runs through magnetic levitation. It does not have ball bearings, this is why it gets dry so easily. I would like to buy toshiba OEM parts. But don't know where to get through the internet. Here in Brazil is damn hard to get things.

Also I would like to buy an HDD adapter to toshiba 5205 (part #PA3223U-1ETC) but for this I need someone on USA to buy it for me and ship it to me. Cause toshiba dont ship directly to foreign countries. If anybody could do this for me, I could pay a fee for this favor.

Thanks anyway,

Yeah, I got that message once when after reassembling my laptop I had used the wrong length of screw to hold down the top left hand corner of the keyboard thus jamming up the fan. So basically if you are seeing that message, then your fan has stopped turning. There may be other permanent damage, but by design Intel have included thermal protection (ie processor slowdown) in Pentium 4 processors for such incidents when they do occur.

For replacement Toshiba parts try Impact Computers their main offices are in USA, but they ship to Brazil, and they also have a regional office in Brazil too.

Thanks, man. I was worried because of the processor's slowdown. I didn't know intel included this thermal protection. I'm much more confortable now.

I ordered the cooler fan from Impact Computers (USA), it was shipped on 10/05. As soon as it arrives I will be posting a message telling everybody if I had success just by replacing the cooling fan.

Also, I ordered an 2nd HDD bay. Hope I had my laptop back in use, and with an additional HD!!

Thank you very much for your reply.
