Max hard drive size...??

Thread Starter
I'm not yet going to put in another hard drive, but stumbled on the Gateway website. I noticed the max hard drive size of my notebook (3522GZ, aka:M210)
is listed as 60Gig., which is what it comes with.

Have any of you upgaded your notebook to a lager hard drive other than the max listed. I talked to support, and they said the larger capacity the hard drive, the thicker the hard driver, therefore it would not fit in the case. Am I missing something? I thought all hard drive enclosures, ie: 2.5 are the same and 3.5 hard drives are obviously going to have different dimensions.

It's not a big deal now, but I would like to know if it would be possible to upgrade to a larger hard drive later. Wish I would have known before I bought, I guess that was one area I was naive in.

Thanks for any replies.

dude... what they told you is a load of crap. Just get the 100gb 7200rpm hard drive when you can, notebook hdd demensions (in my experience) are the exact same. The best way to deal with Gateway is void the warrenty right when you get it, it'll save you the headach.

Well, it was scheduled to come out a year ago, but it is still MIA.

Definitely not yet.

It has hit 60GB, but it may not have hit 80GB yet, but 100GB is definitely not there yet.

There's not even an 80GB planned, for whatever reason. Ther eis a 100GB that was supposed to be out a year ago, but keeps getting pushed back. I am pretty certain Hitachi has larger ones than 60GB ready, but no reason to release them while they can still reap therewards of being the only one ... sell the 60 for what they would be selling an 80-100-120 for if they had to. More profilt for them. I wish Seagate would hurry uproll out their 100GB for that reason - not that I would touch the seagate with a 10ft. IDE cable after all the delays, but so Hitachi will turn their larger ones out.

Ok, that's cool, I figured they were wrong about the size.

What about the bios, would I still be ok, going over the manufacturers suggested max capacity?

Gateway said, the max memory the Gateway M505X/XL could handle was 1GB, but we soon found out 2GB memory was the max. Also, Gateway said, 60GB was the max on the Gatway M505X/XL, but not true.

Bold: Heh. Computer Humor.

Underlined: I believe either Seagate or Hitachi have released 100GB 7200RPM drives to manufactures and is planning to release them to the general public Q4.2005 or Q1.2006. Theres a thread (or 6) on this already.

Both: I was waiting for this reason too. If and when Seagate releases their large-capacity 7200RPM demonds to us consumers, the price of the 7K60 will plummit to a respectable level instead of this astronomical $230 I am seeing.

Shouldn't be a problem, unlessthey specifically locked the BIOS to not allow a drive larger than 60GB in the machine (would be senseless).

I have read a good bit of the same. Unfortunately, we've been hearing the OEMs were getting them for about 5-6 months through the grapevine. I have yet to see a notebook with one in it yet though. Every time the rumor suposedly comes straight from Seagate. I was getting optimistic when they actually released the box (with the 5400RPM 100GB in it ... arrrgh), but it has been a few months since then too. i wonder how many people out there have that drive that are unaware that they bought a drive that was falsely advertised

It all depends on the bios, it may not support 48bit LBA, but even if not, you will still be able to go to 137GB with no sweat.

I once had a 440BX motherboard that told me it would only go to 256mb of ram, I stuck (2) 256 chips in and they worked well.

Sry, point was, what gateway says rarly matters. Yes I apologieze if I lead anyone on, it was more of a wait until the 7k100 comes out then get it cuz it'll be more worth it.

Seagate just released their 7200 RPM 100GB Momentus 7200.1

They also just upped the maximum 2.5" drive capacity to 120 GB (5400 rpm) called Momentus 5400.2
