You don't mention if you're trying to use the remote desktop from the same pc or not. Or if the pc your using is on the same 'side' of your router. I haven't used this part of XP yet but have tried http://ip.adress/tsweb? Also what happens if you telnet to port 80 on your computer? Does the remote desktop respond with anything?

If you are using the remote desktop that came with Windows XP (not the remote control features in netmeeting) then you need to connect using the "Remote Desktop Connection" application.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection

From here you type in the remote ip address or name if you have DNS name resolution. If you have a firewall between the remote computer and the Internet you will need to ensure the proper ports are open and forwarded to the computer being controlled.

Good luck ....

i finally got it up and working on my internal network. That's not a problem. Now, i have forwarded RPC port 3389 to port 3389 and to the internal IP of his PC using TCP protocol. I got the router IP address and I am unable to create a connection. I enable the web service just to verify that I was able to reach my PC, and that worked just fine.

Sounds like you've forwarded the ports correctly. Is the remote computer also behind a firewall? If so, it may need port forwarding turned on as well. If not, double check your local settings again as it certainly sounds like a NAT/forwarding issue.

A second approach would be to share the desktop using IIS web services which will allow you to remotely control your machine from a web browser. Checkout Set Up Remote Desktop Web Connection For configuration instructions.

Let me know how you make out.

When you connect using the remote desktop tool, if your connecting over the internet, are you using an IP address or the computer name? The computer name will not work unless you have DNS setup to forward to the proper IP.

When you get that white screen that says

Quote:
Type the name of the remote computer you want to use, select the screen size for your connection, and then click Connect.

When the connection page opens, you can add it to your Favorites for easy connection to the same computer.
And has a box to enter server. Either enter the external ip, or just hit connect. Then enter your User name in the next screen and pw. You have to have a pw set for your user name. Under control panel/users add a pw. Make sure the port you chose is open on your router.

Now my question is. I can get remote desktop to show local drives. But if I use the web version I cant find how you access files remotely. I use remote desktop all the time the normal way. Web way I have working, but cant figure out how to get it to access local drives (ie comp im on at the time) Im trying to get this setup for when im in Japan. Will have lappy, but wifes parents are still on 98 so want this option also. Any idea guys?
