Sony FS550 gets too hot?!? Please reply asap

I jsut got a sony vaio fs550 in exchange for toshiba m40. I;ve noticed this laptop gets way hotter on the underside. and i dont mean to say the m40 didnt get hot, the sony is actuallyy quite alot hotter. gets uncomfortable after 3--45 mins of using it for basic not too processor intesive tasks like outlook minimized, couple of explorer windows, messenger. when on my lap, i can feel the heat through my jeans and even through a blanket. I dont think there is a fan on the undrside of fs550 that i'm blocking. this seems to be more from soeme component inside, because it gets hot even jsut sitting on a table. the area right in the centre of the underside is very hot, so is the area under XP HOME certificate sticker and the area under the touchpad. I want to know if this is a general sony fs550 issue or if just this piece. i have a couple of days to exchange, so a quick reply would be appreciated. i dont want to get stuck with a lemon with a laptop i've already overpaid for.

edit: just checked the manual, the three areas getting warmest i think are air vents, but considering that the main air vent is at the back of the computer, i dont think these vents should pose too much of a heating problem. afterall isnt it expected for people to use these LAPtops on their laps and hence pose a vent blockage issue? poor design or poor parts?

I used to have an FS (UK) version which gets mildly warm underneath. It's somewhat disappointing considering the components that are used to make up this machine. I run R:TW and it got quite warm. Actually come to think of it I couldn't get the demo to work as the graphics did not run properly, but in 20 mins or so trying to mess about with it in-game, it DID get quite warm. Still playable though!!

Although, in normal internet browsing, it was ok (and the major MAJOR benefit was the complete silence - no fans, nothing!)

EDIT: The air-vents on the bottom are for air intake I think - if you touch them you will notice they are somewhat colder than the surroundings, therefore if you block them the machine will probably get warmer.

i dont do alot of graphics itnensive stuff, but at one time i will have 8-10 explorer windows open, 3-4 word documents, some businss apps, outlook, a bunch of other misc stuff, plus the rgular taskbar utilities. do u think the intel graphcis and processor can handle these tasks well without screeen refresh alg or alg between switching apps

this is sitting it on a table? or lap operations?

they are now called notebooks, not laptops, because they are not recommended to be put directly on TOP of your LAP. Fyi. even a warm notebook can cause skin irritation. You should get one of those notebook coolers, so you can put the cooler between the notebook and your lap.

coolers = too mcuh hassle. i'd ratehr jsut grab any old book nearby and palce it on that. the reason i ws referring to lap operating is becasue sometimes at night i'll be in bed wroking, and thats when the heat issue gets irritating.

p.s. skin irritation is minor. laptop heat also causes your "boys" to malfunction.

My FS stays pretty cool. The only part that really gets warm is the memory compartment. If you think the FS is hot, you should feel the bottom of the Dell M70..that thing is hot enough to cook an egg on.
