Apple User Needs Help Buying HP

Hi everyone!

I am wanting to buy my accounts person (Elaine) a HP laptop. I have owned Apples since 1987 (LC and LC II, etc) and know nothing of pc's. I find the HP product tree very confusing - retailers here in the UK list different model numbers to other retailers, and none seem to have the model numbers listed (as current?) at HP's UK website.

I quite liked the look of the zd8053ea on HP's site. However, I can't find one in a webstore. I have somehow picked-up a pdf of the zd8185ea and that looks great.

I don't want to pay top-price for a recently-discontinued model, so I could really use some guidance. Elaine likes the big screen and numeric keypad and, although most of my choices run at only 4,200 rpm, she will run the machine near-permanently on the mains.

I would really appreciate your kind help with my buying choices here in the UK.

Thank you!

Steven, Eastbourne.

Why can't you get her a Mac?

The models numbers vary by retailer so that they can offer them at their own price. This way, they don't need to worry about having to pricematch with other stores. Some regions want/require certain configurations as well, so there's quite a few.

ZD8000 models

I'm guessing here is where you looked .

Did you find this one already?

Hi dragonwolf!

Thank you for your great reply. I was a bit disappointed with Kakaze's reply - but then I went to see what I could afford in the PowerBook range and I am now taking his suggestion very seriously. If my lovely Elaine will consider a Mac then that will be excellent. However, if she prefers to stay pc then I shall be back in need of buying advice!

Have you heard of the HP model designation zd8185ea?

If a PowerBook is too expensive, Steve, why not look into getting her an iBook?

Nope. I wasn't looking at HP to save money, I assumed she'd want a pc lappie to complement her Epic pc desktop. I have a budget of £1,500 to £2,000 and Elaine is worth every penny, be it HP or Apple. I have just received an email from her saying she'd like to look at my trusty old (June 2000) G3 PowerBook (400 MHz "Pismo"). Fortunately, I've cranked it to 640Mb RAM and 80Gb HDD and it runs OSX. We might have a convert!

If your still looking at PCs

I found the following for that model.

zd8185ea

I believe that's the German site. I wouldn't concern yourself too much with the model#, I would look at the specs. You can have two different model numbers with the same specs, they are just sold in different regions so they have different model numbers. It's like buying a car. The car that comes without leather seats is the "L model" and the one with leather seats is the "XL model".

Thank you very much for that German link! I have made a note of the specs I like (those in the German zd8185ea) and shall look around UK webstores for the model with identical features.

Unless Elaine likes the look of OSX tomorrow . . . . . !
