See this article. Hopefully they offer thos drives in E-IDE format too instead of just SATA. THey also mentioned about the 7.2K 100GB drive consuming more power!

That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone though. I will gladly take the power consumption for a 100G version of my Hitachi drive.

100 > 60!

Hmm, I was planning to swap in the 5,400RPM 100GB, but I may hold out for the 120GB...

Probably a good idea. Getting a larger all-around gain in exchange for "suffering" with your 100 5.4k for a little while longer. :-)

I'm in the same boat.

Actually, I'll be suffering with Dell's stock 60GB/5.4K drive until I get either the 100/5.4K or the 120/5.4K. It depends how long I can stand it and how long until the new 120GB drives are available.

The problem according to that article is that those drives will have a SATA interface only. Hopefully that is not true and Seagate realizes that most people still don't have SATA on their notebooks.

Good point.

As for how long can you wait (assuming they have a PATA interface version) it's just a matter of space. Try to stretch your 60 gigs out until the right drive is available.

Both drives have PATA versions per Seagate:

That's good news. Hopefully, they'll start shipping soon.

I had always planned to swap drives for a bit of extra capacity and performance. I'll probably throw the 60GB in an external enclosure. I ordered the basic 60GB as sort of the barebones option, so I can test drive the XPS 2 and make sure I want to keep it (depending on screen and size issues) before I upgrade the hard drive and memory.

Bullshit! I call Bullshit! Here's another paper launch for these bozos! They announced the 7200RPM 100GB drives last June...still can't buy them anywhere...now they're announcing a 120GB model even though the 100GB model is 11 months late to retail with no end in sight? LOL...maybe the 120 drive will be out sometime in 2006, but it's not bloody likely we'll see it before Christmas this year...

The Momentus 7200.1 will be in both Ultra ATA-100 and SATA.

We are in luck! Now, only if they will be released already...

Has hitachi announced a 100GB 7200 rpm drive?

Technically, it was announced about a year ago but no one had seen one for sale yet.

I contacted Seagate, this is the response I got:

Thanks for your interest in the Momentus 7200.1. The drive should be available at retailers in the June time frame.

Is that the 120 G or the 100 G version?
Pfft, 60gb, 100 gb what's the difference. How much do you need.

I'll just wait a few years for the 300+gb version to come out...
I'll just wait 10 years for the 100 Terabyte 30,000 RPM model.
