Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6372, Firmware update

Thread Starter
I upgraded from 1030 to 1032 no problem. I will test it to see if it accepts 8x disc to burn when I buy some.

I couldn't update to 1732. It doesn't recognize it. Did anyone else have this problem? Is there two different buners? I noticed the 8790 owners were updating from 1730 to 1732.

I have a 5690.

Plopped in a Memorex 8x DVD-R and it burned no problem with v1032 update. Only burns @ 4x though.

Oh well, better than nothing. With v1030 it wouldn't even accept the same 8x DVD.

Can't expect a drive to write faster than the OEM specifications:

4X DVD-/+R Write
2X DVD-/+RW Write
8X DVD-ROM Read
16X CD-R Write
10X CD-RW Write HS
24X CD-ROM Read

Is this the same firmware update?

I have a 5690, with the SD-R6372.
I went to the sdd.toshiba.com support site to find firmware updates.
The only choice that seems close is the one for the SD-R6012.
It updates 1030, 1031, 1032, 1033 to version 1034.
How do I find the current firmware version?
Any ideas?

Sorry, failed to mention why I'm investigating the firmware update.

Whenever I put in a CD with Autoplay, my computer freezes. I have all the Autoplay options set to No Action but it still tries to play the CD. Usually after a restart I can open the CD and run the installer. I can burn CDs and DVDs; play DVDs and music CDs. The problem seems to occur mostly with program installers. The drive spins up the CD, sometimes the sound/music starts. The wait/busy cursor is displayed. Then, nothing. Computer frozen. Even the clock stops.

Do you have ULEAD, ROXIO, or NERO Installed. If so are you using any of their "CD to act like HDD" type of software. Nero's IN-CD, and I forgot that the others are call "off-hand". Also ULEAD has some weird Optical interfaces that can really cause things to hang.

I see an InCD tab on the drive properties and I have Nero Startsmart 1.0.0.14 installed which appears to include Express 6. I use Sony Screenblast 3 to make DVD movies. Also have Sonic MyDVD 4.5 for simple DVD authoring. Is the problem related to the feature called Drive Letter Access (DLA)? I think that is where a CD-RW is able to be used like a "very large floppy disk". I've had problems with this feature on other computers.

Ran the Nero InfoTool and found the firmware version: 1030
Also got a (previously unseen) warning message when I start Nero saying there is a "known compatibility issue with this version of Windows" (I have XP Pro SP2). Will track that down, maybe that will fix the problem. InfoTool reports Nero Burning ROM 6.0.0.28, Vision Express 2.0.1.15, ShowTime 1.0.1.23, InCD 4.0.12.5. Also reports that AutoPlay is still on ?! Guess I didn't find the right place to kill that.

Any comments on the firmware update from Toshiba?

Partial mystery solved ... Nero software FAQ indicates that the InCD and IMAPI don't always play well together. I installed all the Nero updates and the problem did not change. Removed InCD from my registry startup, problem solved. I rarely (never?) use Drive Letter Access to packet write on RW media as it is to unreliable between software vendors. If I ever need it, I can run it from the Nero folder (UDF mounts differently from regular CD and DVD disks). Many thanks to Gary for the kick in the brain to help me go down the right diagnostic path.

Still would like advice on the Firmware update for my SD-R6372 ...

Hello,
Could you please post the link to the Toshiba R6372 firmware update site? The Toshiba people at http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Pat...D-R6372Support don't appear to provide it.
Thanks, Mark.

This is a website with the R6372 drivers. I've just Googled it but haven't had the chance to install them yet though.

Hopefully they're OK.
This is the forum where I read about them.

Mark.

Even better, drivers from an official Toshiba (Europe) website here:

Hope that helps somebody, I sure hope it helps me when I start flashing
tommorow ...
