The DOS utility SVCTAG v3.4 can be used to change/remove the service tag.

My mind is thinking of all kinds of reasons you would want to remove a service tag, and none of them are legitimate..

Seriously, the only reason that immediately comes to mind is that it's stolen.

eithe that or there are two identical systems, one with warranty and one without and he is trying to get free warranty

either way, I can't see a legit reason

Do I hear the sound of police sirens and neeros screaming like a little girl as he is beaten to a bloody pulp by the blue-men group hired by Dell to find and utterly humilate people who try to take advantage of them?

Plausible explanation...I'd buy it.

Won't simply taking out the bios battery erase the tag (and the bios conifg) ?

Nope, the service tag info along with the BIOS password are kept in NVRAM and the only way to erase the tag would be through the use of the SVCTAG utility.

Thanks.

When I got my mobo exchanged, the service tag wasn't there. I guess I can create my own now.

You may want to take a look at the readme concerning system boards that currently aren't programmed with a service tag.

PHP Code:
What does this utility do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This utility is used to re-program the system service tag on certain Dell Portable systems. The utility may only work on systems which already have a service tag programmed. If no service tag currently exists, the utility may return an error message and fail. To program the service tag on a system that does not already have one: - For Value-line systems: Run EE-Value.exe /S=XXXXXXX, where XXXXXXX is alphanumeric and all letters are capitalized. - For SmartStep/Smart PC 200N/250N: Run STAG_W1.EXE /W XXXXXXX, where XXXXXXX is alphanumeric and all letters are capitalized. - For Molokai: Run SERTAG.exe /W XXXXXX, where XXXXXX is alphanumeric and all letters are capitalized. - For all other systems: Run ASSET.COM /S XXXXXXX, where XXXXXXX is the new service tag.

i'd still be wary of it possibly being a stolen item. i would think there may be some issues of service tag not matching up with main board configuration and if you are seeking warranty service, may not if it is not matched up (i.e. you have a new board that dell hadn't replaced for you)
