remove dell service tag from the bios - Page 2

Dell replaced the mobo on my XPS Gen 1 and they did not put the service tag back in mine either .
will this work on the XPS?

dell sent me a new mother board for my dim 3000 and I put my service tag on it after installing it. I had on site sevice but I didn't want them messing with my system. I am very picky.

actually service tags and express service codes are more of a means for dell support agents to check the records of the system on their end. Meaning, for example, if you need to call dell support for your system the original service tag you give the agent would pull up the records of that system. It doesn't really matter wether you replaced the mobo, or flashed the bios to change the service tag because those codes would only be useful if you need to contact dell and if you give the wrong one they wont be able to pull up a record and thus wont be able to help you.

hoped that cleared some stuff up..

My mind is thinking of all kinds of reasons you would want to remove a service tag, and none of them are legitimate.
Actually, I have one: Installing a new bios update blew the Service Tag out of the bios. The support app won't install, nor will some of the Dell apps.

The second is the cradle-to-grave issue of surplus machines. Same with serial numbers on monitors. Scrappers agree to remove identifiers from the units, and that service code identifies the original purchaser.

Bios updates on any dell computer made since at least 2000 will NOT remove the service tag. the service tag is stored in the non volatile section of bios memory.

Even a scrapper has no reason to remove the service tag as without a service tag, Dell wont ever give any support for your machine.

The only reason I could see someone wanting to get rid of the service tag would be to hide the fact that it's stolen in case the person who buys it calls the police.

Service Tag

isn't quite accurate...it did. The difference between theory and reality is that reality is experience that has bit you. Dell has the utility to restore it in their ftp site.

As to the support issue, come on. These companies sell rooms full of equipment for a couple hundred bucks. All they require is the liability of 'cradle to grave' future legislation removed, which means they require the removal of any identifying information. They would rather it be salvaged for metal, and in some cases, that's what they stipulate.

The DOS utility SVCTAG v3.4 can be used to change/remove the service tag.

What I got from a Dell support site was this:

No one can handle this by email, and you can see your email was deleted -- it is a violation of forum rules to post that.
You must call Dell Out of Warranty support (there's a $50 charge), and then you'll need to prove ownership of the system.

However, I did see a reference to ver 3.4 as a torrent download.....

Example i just get a serious problem on the airport last week with my m17x-r2 because a lovely engineer mistyped and entered a wrong service tag into my replacement system board.
when i realized my tag is wrong i called up aw and i been told is not causing any problem for me... later.....
i lost my flight because i don't want to leave my laptop with them, and took me 2 hours to explain this laptop is my i "just happened to have a horribly wrong service tag" well it is not a problem for them but it is for me who is going to pay my lost ticket now???? and the pain i had to go through .btw checkmend say the service tag i have been claimed insurance ???
so never i leave an engineer touch my laptop ever again.

the service tag is written to the firmware. It doesn't go away by removing the power from CMOS, I had to update the tag on every system I put a new motherboard in back when I was a Dell field tech.

I had a co-worker who entered the same service tag # for two different desktops.

In corporate OS deployment scenarios, there are times when changing the service tag, or at least correcting it, are necessary.  SCCM deployment configurations set to advertise an OS Task Sequence to all Unknown Computers can fail if the Service Tag isn't correct, or at least unique.  Having a duplicate or generic Service Tag entered on a Dell system after motherboard replacement causes SCCM to assign a duplicate SMBIOS GUID (Unique Identifier) to the system, producing Task Sequence errors because the SCCM Database believes that the machine has already received an image.  There are ways to avoid it in the SCCM Site Settings, but rather than reconfigure your entire site to accommodate the incompetence of whoever replaced the motherboard, I would be much happier correcting the problem at the workstation level.

You want to remove a persistant Service Tag when you change a motherboard and use a refurbished one from another machine. Now, you have a Service Tag that doesn't match the one on your current chassis.
