2 XPS's Samsung vs. LG

My current XPS has a Samsung screen and a NEC DVD/RW. The screen is nice and I have no problems with it.

I have another XPS that will be delivered today that I ordered with the 33%. Looks like they are sending me the LG screen and Sony DVD/RW.

- J9662 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LENGTH/LONG

- P7464 ASSEMBLY, DVD+/-RW, 8X, SONY, INSPIRON, SULLIVAN/TOBAGO

I know the DVD is a quick 30 second swap. So I'm not worried about that. I'm trying not to think bad about my LG until I see it, but what should I do if I like my Samsung way better than my LG? Will Dell notice if I swap LCD's?

Instead of trying to decieve them, why not just explain the truth?

Be nice and they're usually pretty good.

Hopefully I will love my LG and then all will be good. If I do like the Samsung better do you think they will send a tech to replace the screen, or would they let me do it myself?

What kind of pictures do you want? I plan on having the 2 side-by-side to compare screens, but I can do more if you want.

That's what I call a no-brainer. You spend 2-3 thousand dollars and they send iffy parts? By including different screens for the same selected option, Dell is stating that they consider the parts equal. So they shouldn't have a problem if you swap one "equal" part of another, should they?

Dell will not notice if you swap displays (or optical drive, ram, battery or keyboard for that matter). After all, they think the LG and the Samsung are of the same quality and are shipping each randomly - so what difference should it make?

Also, if you are swapping within two XPS machines, just swap the entire display assembly. Only a few screws and about 5 minutes are needed to do so.

Thanks for the tip about changing the entire display.

The only way I know I'm receiving a LG today is by looking at my Service Tag. When I compare the screens the parts numbers are different, so Dell knows for sure which display came with which machine. But do they even check when you retrun it? Would that even be something they would look for?

Hopefully this will all work out in the end, becasue it gives me the chance to compare the two screens with my own eyes.

I've swapped screens and cd rw drives without dell noticing and/or caring, I doubt you will have a problem.

Yeah, my cousin and I both got XPS1's when they first came out and deliberately made Dell send us a third 'Frankenstein' machine so we could steal all the best parts for our main boxes...just told them one of the originals wouldn't boot or some BS...

Dell don't notice or care when they get back different parts, as long as no parts are actually MISSING (i.e. stolen)...

I finally have my new XPS2. It has a LG screen. Now I truely know what the sparkles are. It doesn't seem that bad though, but I will have to compare the two screens side by side tonight to make my final decision.

The easy way is to change the brightness if there is no change between 2-3 then it is a LG. If you want to know for sure download Powerstrip from Download.com.

DELLivered - what is your synopsis? I received the LG and am extremely happy so far. Obviously you're like me and this sparkle effect doesn't really bother you. It actually looks like they discribe it an anti-glare coating. How is your comparison coming along? This lcd has terrific colour in my opinion.

I'm very pleased with my LG. When it is side by side with my Samsung, the LG blows the Samsung away with the brightness and vibrance of it's colors. I was completely happy with my Samsung, and was hoping not to get an LG on my second one. Now I'm glad I got a chance to see both screens. I'm sure there are bad Samsungs and LGs out there, but I've been lucky enough to have two excellent screens to compare. If I had never seen the LG I would have been completely happy with my Samsung. My LG does have some sparkles, but it doesn't really bother me or they are not very bad one. The LG does have an overwhelming blue tint to the screen with the factory color settings, but I was able to adjust it out to my liking with Powerstrip. You have to be careful though because some adjustments can cause the sparkles to jump out at you and become considerable more noticable.

If the majority of the LG screens are of this quality I can see why Dell continues to use them in XPS2. It looks like the Sony screens at Best Buy that stand head and shoulders above the rest. The colors just jump out at you.

I took a couple of photos last night to compare the screens side by side. I will upload them this morning when I get a chance.

Yeah, my LG had that blueness about it too. The Steam windows should look green/gray, but instead they just looked grey. I messed about with powerstrip and found a setting that I like. Also, I only notice the sparkles if my eyes are below the part of the screen I am looking at. Still, I'd like to see a Samsung so I can compare and contrast.

Here are a couple of pics. They aren't the greatest, but they get the point across.
