MR9800 Discontinued?

Thread Starter
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is the ATI Mobility 9800 discontinued? I cannot find it anywhere on Dell's site, nor anywhere on the internet for that matter. I have a 9700 64mb card at the moment and it just isnt cutting it in todays game titles. If anyone has some information where I can find a MR9800 (or a 9700 128mb because I am desperate ) please let me know.

Thanks.

Goddamn I cant believe Dell is still charging so damn much for that card even though it is quite outgunned right now!!! 400 bux?!?!?

I agree, its still way too overpriced.

There is no reason for Dell now to reduce the MR9800 price. They cannot sell the card as fast as before - not so many people are interested in it now. So, they're getting their money by keeping the price at top level.
I've ordered mine about month ago, that was one of the last days when 9800 had 10% discount. Combined with additional stackable 10% coupon and after canceled installation fee it came to final $270 (after tax). It looks much more reasonabe.

Check regularly http://www.jumpondeals.com/ , http://www.xpbargains.com/ and other sites like this for coupons.

Hmm it makes sense I guess but it would make more sense to me if they dropped the price and got rid of all their stock.

You'e assuming they buy a bunch and have it sitting around waiting for orders. Dell doesn't tend to do that - they use "Just in time" ordering, so they don't order from ATI until they need the parts. Not keeping a lot of inventory on hand is a big part of their competitive advantage over HP etc.

You're right. I've been waiting almost 3 weeks for my order to be shipped. But the rest is also true. If many people were ordering MR9800 then "Just in time" ordering would happen more often and Dell might lower the price. MR9800 is not a hot stuff now from Dell's Seles department stand point.

Plus the part costs a certain amount to manufacture. Neither ATI nor Dell are going to take a loss on it deliberately. ATI is more concerned with the X800 and X850 sales than MR 9800 (ok, same core, but it doesn't help their marketting efforts to put a push on the 9800 name). Dell in turn is more interested in selling XPS 2 and 9300s than anything to do with "last year's model."

Yea I understand what everyone is saying. I was coming from a perspective if they just had stock sitting there, forgetting about their "J-I-T" policy. Hehe...
