I thought I would mention that based on my attempts and research on various internet forums it appears that it is not possible to boot Windows XP from a USB drive. It appears that the reason is that Windows XP unloads the USB drivers during the boot process and then reloads them. It would appear to me that Microsoft does not want users to be able to boot from USB storage devices although I'm not really sure why since I thought their new hardware detection approach was aimed at making casual copying difficult. Anyway, if anyone knows my conclusion to be wrong, I would appreciate being corrected and would appreciate a HowTo on booting XP from a USB drive.
I was interested in this because I want to get a 9860 set up with Raid 0 with Linux as my operating system. I don't want to share my Raid 0 disks with Windows but would like to be able to boot and use Windows XP. The old 8890 was perfect in this regard because you could get brackets which would allow you to put hard drives in the optical drive bays. However, Sager/Clevo is apparently not supporting this functionality with the 9860. Perhaps they thought USB solved this problem but it appears that it does not for the scenario which I am interested in.
Anyway, I have another thread entitled "A Strange Question About Optical Drive Bays" which I just updated which gives more detail on thoughts I've had about how to get the functionality that I would like for anyone interested. Some people responding to my original thread had recommended that I try the USB solution. I decided to give it a shot but it appears to have failed.
