FORUM ISSUES : I stick my neck out once again

Its been a long time since I posted any "serious" nonsense

In the interests of maintaining my reputation I decided to rack up a list of all the things that are pissing me off...and although this thread might stir up a bit of trouble...I think some of the issues are worth discussing and I hope you guys conduct yourselves in a way that is becoming of this forum.

  • Signatures - Images and otherwise

Until a few weeks back I had a one line sig. Unfortunately..looking at some of the other bigger and hopelessly narcissistic sigs left me feeling insecure and less masculine. I therefore proceeded to manage the issue by using a sig as large as my ass and as meaningful as a banana split at a ski resort.
Over the next few days of posting I realized how annoying this sig looked when it repeated several times every page. To make the issue more "personal" I used a dialup internet connection and the load times were shockingly poor. I decided that my selfish and narcissistic needs come second to the ability of someone on a dialup to view notebookforums.com and I therefore removed my sig and replaced it with a much smaller and more meaningful...albeit shameless...plug!

There are several members with HUGE sigs that take time to load even on broadband.

In the interests of those on dialup etc. I hereby petition to REMOVE completely the ability of the user to display large images in signatures. I also petition to restrict the size of the sig (in terms of lines - corresponding to a specific font size) to 5 lines of text. Any image must also fit within this area.

  • Search Function

How about a more prominent "SEARCH" function? Something that stands out so that people who want information or have information can first do a search for prior threads about that subject and THEN proceed to post this information?

I have already seen 4-5 threads about the new ATi graphics card (dont sweat the details). I think this will make the work easier for the MODs and keep things on track for someone who is looking to gather info.

Basically - think about posting before you post...think about how you can keep discussions in one thread...a focused source of information. For example look at the "HEADPHONES THREAD" in the audio section. I would have LOVED to start a separate thread for "self-promotion" but I dont need any of that...I am notorious as it is Another example is the "Linux" sub-forum where some really informative threads can be found.

I think the laptop sub-forums are severely lacking in this respect and need to be cleaned up. On a scale of usefullness the laptop subforums score a 6/10 when it could easily be a 8 or 9. I just have to hunt through multiple threads with conflicting information and it is VERY frustrating!

  • Keep it clean around here!!

Yeah...I cannot recommend NBF to my younger family members and friends because of some of the content in here. Must we be selfish about EVERYTHING? Think about the younger members and potential members we are turning off from NBF because we display disturbing images in our avatars and sigs. Also - the language filter needs a revamp with more filters.

This is a place to share information and have fun - if obscene images, foul language etc. are the only ways you can express yourself then head right back to primary school. Fun doesnt mean using the F**K word like punctuation. I do this a lot and dont realize it until I re-read my posts.

  • POST Content...quantity and quality

It is true that quality is more important than quantity and a "sensible" post which is short and precise is more valuable than a wordy rant like this one

But there are times when people post stuff like

PHP Code:
"Ok" "Wow" - I did this recently :( "LOL" "ROTFLMFAOMFG..." "PWNED!" "POTD"
Now I dont know how useful such posts may be. Sure you have to express yourself but how about giving it some thought before the action? Writing well thought out posts with good language can be fun you know

  • Moderators - flame wars/ obscenities/ verbal violence etc.

This is a word of advice to the mods. You guys do a great job but sometimes it is better to rule with the iron fist than clean up with the plastic broom. All the mods here are very very reasonable and understanding but you need to catch the problem at its source and...much as I hate these cliche's - NIP it in the BUD. There are several instances of flame wars and basic unpleasantness that should have been seen and removed right at the beginning. I dont know how many mods are there on NBF but if you needs more...recruit more. I think there are WAAAAAAY too many subforums around here and 10-15 mods will still have a struggle to handle the load.

These are just my opinions. Some of you will agree with me and many of you will disagree with me and express yourselves accordingly. Either way - before you post anything vile and un-civil - remember this - picture yourself standing in front of someone 6'4" tall, 250 lbs of muscle and a fist larger than a dinner plate - and then use your dirty vocabulary as you deem fit. I encourage clean discussions and debate...but nastiness is another story.

Your's sincerely,

gsferrari

I agree with the majority of what youve said.

The dialup thing is the only issue that I dissagree on. I'm really not sure what to do.

Definitely agree with the first.

As for the second, it's nearly impossible to do much else. To some extent, it is a direct result of the "Instant-On, Fast Food" age in which we live. Remember the mean-age of the average patron here. I personally find it extremely rude to continually see the same things asked again and again (especially so when the same question exists on the first page of threads), and as a result have since stopped frequenting some of the subforums where it runs rampant. Not certain what more can be done, other than perhaps make it mandatory that a user have a certain number of posts prior to granting the "New Thread" privilege. How often are the announcement threads even read prior to posting? It's ashame.

Surprising there is not a "Forum Issues" subsection here.

Judging by the rabid proliferation of sub-forums here we might see one pretty soon

Thank you for your feedback guys. More than just agreeing or disagreeing with me I would like to hear your comments as well. What changes would you like to see...

I agree with you for the most part. Even one of the Dell mods thought the same.
http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=76530
What bothers me is that that thread has only gotten ~950 views in 5 days, but another thread created yesterday has gotten ~500.

Sigs are kinda nice, but they can get out of hand. I liked the look of another forum member's so I basically copied it, and I like the look because it's clean, and not outlandish.

Meh...problems listed (my sig I'm guessing) this is still one of the Best if not the Best Forum that I have visted belonged to. Also Keep the young people out there they ones that cause all the problems Damn Teenagers don't need to be on the internet.
Every single one of the points brought up and detailed in the first post are moderator-related issues. I draw upon the mod's best judgement to determine if these issues are out of line. The forum members do an excellent job of policing the most obnoxious "lack of content/flame war/huge sig/keepin' it clean" posters. This is a self governing society with an administration lurking in the background, staying abreast of up to the minute activities.

If there is a concern about foul language, particularly outside Off Topic, the REPORT button is right at the bottom of the members profile next to the rep button. If you're lookin' for a clean Off Topic, better use a sand blaster.

Dan so much better then I could ever hope to post/explain.

The primary thing that bothers me is the "What should I buy?" posts in Notebook General.

They do not bother me if they are well thought out and well written - as in the poster uses decent grammer/spelling and has a specific type of laptop or specific needs in mind.

What gets to me is the seemingly endless supply of posts that look like this:

Quote:
TITLE: Collage starting in next years!!? AWSOM LATPOP NEEDS NOW!!?! HELP! Avdice!

i am a starting at uni in 3 mons. & need a laptops that is not slow. I don't have more than less of much money to spend, but I can go higher if needsed. i like to play games and listen to music that id ownlaod and surf onm the web...................... what is a good laptop if you know that is good for what I need. it needs to be good and cheap but not cheap like it will break. thanx. p.s. my friend has a dell and it suxors. no dells. amd owant somethjing with internet on it. if you know any good laptops that are like this thnx.s i need it for collage so soon but not too soon. but HURRY it is urgent toreply!!!!?!? okay?
Where do these kids who couldn't win the Downs Syndrome spelling bee get money to buy a laptop? And what "collage" is admitting them?

I guess these posts piss me off for two reasons:

1) They are so non-specific, not mentioning prospective models, uses, weight/size, battery life, etc, etc, etc - but they expect an immediate response even though they aren't going away to "collage" for a few months. Then they bump the thread if they don't get a response in an hour. Also once you reply and say "Hey buddy, we'd love to tell you what to get, but you need to a) explain yourself better b) figure out what it is you are explaining, as in what are your needs/uses/req's?," they get all defensive or upset and type some more unintelligible gibberish or something.

2) And the main reason they piss me off is that it is symptomatic of how shitty America's youth is. I'm 22 and just graduating from college (err.. I mean collage), so I have fairly recent experience with it and even encounter these kinds of idiots at the university level (I grade papers for English professors). It makes me sick to my stomach to think that our schools and even universities are turning out people who cannot put together coherent sentences, let alone paragraphs or descriptions and arguments. I don't think the original poster should worry about me using words like "shitty" and the like because at least I am articulate. If younger users come to this forum and see my posts and pick up some curse words, at least they'll get with them dose of passable English in their lives for once. In the end they're going to learn to swear no matter what you do - so they might as well learn it here. What you should be more worried about is the litany of ass-spewed garble that makes its way onto this forums via a sea of morons, many of whom are about to embark on the adventure that is "collage."

You forgot to mention the major reason why people aren't using the search function:

THE SEARCH FUNCTIONALITY SUCKS ON THIS FORUM!!!!!!!!!!

You can't search parts of the sentence or a word and are reduced to putting ridicously simple words to get any and MANY results. In short, it doesn't work like google's search function.

Mich has a good point here. If you don't want to see the signatures, images or avatars for that matter, or if they will kill your load time, then turn 'em off.

Let's not go off making new forum rules when an acceptable solution already exists, this isn't the federal govt.

Same idea w/ the mod's if you see something you think violates forum rules report it, don't wait fo the govt (oops), I mean the mods, to find it on their own.

I've never received a complaint b/c of my avatar or sigs, if it was a valid complaint, then I'd change, but if not, then notify a mod and let them decide. Did you know mods can have larger avatars than the rest of us, I think something like 5 or 6 times as large. Boy talk about eating up bandwidth.

Here's another one: do not use colored fonts! You may think that they are readable, but that's because you are using a theme with a dark background. Other people (like me) may use themes with light background, and we have to highlight those words to find out what they say. In short, always leave font colors on default.

As far as keeping the content clean for the "younger members” that’s not your job, my job, or NBF's job. What kind of parent has no idea of where his kid is or is not surfing? Censorship SUCKS.

And secondly, content and quality? That’s all in the eye of the beholder, one mans trash is another mans treasure. You want content and quality, then I suggest you go find it on another board and quit your whining.

Search function: Yea, ok whatever floats your boat, you could just ignore the duplicates and again, quit whining. In a perfect world you could probably train everyone on the internet to correctly use all the features of vBulletin, but that’s never going to happen.

Flame wars: here is some advice. Don’t READ IT. Change the channel tune it out and move on to another thread. And for F**k sake don’t post in it.

And bring on the 6’4 250 pound enforcer, I’m not too worried about that. I blame this entire post on the damn sensitivity awareness crap that’s been going around. Police yourself, not others.

Yeah... they are 4 times as big... limited to 12KB... compared to your 21KB in your sig. Boy... talk about eating up bandwidth.

Granted... mind is 56KB w00t, but im not really picking any fights w/ the governm...*clears throat* moderators ...

Agreed.

Agreed.

Most of the described problems gs sees already have installed solutions. And I agree with Delta, colors are awesome, but in the wrong hands are just unreadable. You wanna impress me with your lappy's stats? Send me your address and I'll come over and visit it.

Darq, You're making me blush bub.

So you want to deprive youngsters of all this information we have here? Dont you think you are being terribly selfish just because you want to swear? Since when did swearing "communicate" anything other than hate/anger...

I already spend more time on another board because of people like you...

Yes...you shouldnt be worried...at least not until things get more personal.

Awareness is not crap. I think anyone should be able to use this forum because it has useful information and members...but it also has members who are so selfish it boggles the mind.

I cannot recommend this forum to my cousin (14 who just got his new laptop on his birthday from me), my female friends etc.

People like you will always lose. Trying to be "cool" and "radical" and the "I dont give a rats ass about anybody else" attitude is yesterday's loser attitude so snap out of it.

I really want a lot of other people to come in here and scope this place out and if it means that you and other undesirables have to go then I hope it turns out that way. If it means that I have to recommend other forums then so be it...

I expect to win this one...

I do agree with you GS, but before I get shot down, I do know there are options to turn off signatures, but there isn't an option to only prevent images from appearing in signatures (the way I would prefer). I won't go saying images in signature should be banned, but I would like to see the option to hide images in sigs exclusively - ie, so we can still see text in sigs and also images within posts.

Limiting the sig is a good idea (IMO), but is difficult to limit by lines as line length varies for different screen resolutions. Perhaps a character/carriage return limit?

Both points about the search function are valid. I agree it could be a little more prominent, but I also agree it's not that great. Many times I've searched for info and couldn't find anything relevant.

I love my sig.

This forum is full of noobs, so you will see alot of the "my computer doesn't work!!! omfg"

This isn't a forum for enthusiasts really. So you wont find more quality threads. Just the same thread about "SPARKLES" or "what laptop should I get" GS, you have been here a long time, I'm sure you should of noticed that by now.

About the size of the sigs, I agree totally with what you're saying. Some of these sigs take up 90% of my 19in lcd. Which is retarded.
