FORUM ISSUES : I stick my neck out once again - Page 2

meh, I guess I'll join the fray...I'll first say that there are only a few sections I visit regularly, those being the Notebook General Section, Asus Reviews and Benchmarks, Gaming, and Off Topic. I'll go into one of the other sections if I hear about something there (such as a NotW post, or a thread with specs about a HP lappy that was referenced in the general section) or if I have something to contribute (like a digitimes article for example). I make a point to stay out of the Dell and AW sections, and if I do go in there I always wear my hazard suit.

-about sigs/avatars/pics

I'm not a fan of a huge sig, I believe simple is always better, and yes, I've stated that Darq's sig just kills my bandwidth, and that ambit's sig is terribly huge, but the user does have the option to turn off certain features, and so I think that solves the problem. Plus, look at sites like espn and washingtonpost, not to mention other popular websites, they are being designed for broadband speeds now...it can be annoying but it's just the way it is, and the way it's going to be (go ahead and drive your VW Thing on I95 at 55 mph if you want to, but don't get mad when nobody else does the same). That being said, Darq's sig still cracks me up...and it’s a small sig, or at least takes up a small footprint…much like Jack/Astu’s bitmap sig that he had for a little while.

The other thing about pics is that there are several programs which will optimize images for web use, as a rule I try to keep images under a max of 150k (preferably 30-75k), but if it’s in the female rating thread then anything goes

Oh, delta does have a point about font color choices. I know one may not be familiar with all of the NBF styles, but I just love it when someone writes a sentence in size 7 font, all in bold, and then makes it a color that doesn't show up on certain backgrounds. A good example is gs's first post in this thread, where the section titles don't show up with the pale blue theme.

-about search

You can make the search button the size of DanForth's donut fetish and people still won't use it. Often I'll mention that a question was answered elsewhere, or that a certain post should be put in another thread, and I'll get a response along the lines of "yeah, I know but I didn't feel like reading 10 pages" or "yeah, but that other thread went off topic too much" so I don't think there's anything you really can do but show them where the info is and hopefully the new thread dies quickly... And I would not say that the search sucks on this forum, you just have to know what you're looking for and how to use it. Yeah, you might have to read a few pages of a thread, but that's not a bad thing usually. Remember, it's not the size of your tool, but rather how you use it

-about language and post lengths

I really don't find the language to be that bad...well, I find the utilization of language to be bad, but the actual word usage is really pretty tame. Yes, there are flame wars, but those should get taken care of rather quickly...and I believe it's good to have less stringent rules in OT compared to the other sections. Remember there is the ignore feature, which I know people used for roided back during the commentary. In the other sections I always try to make a post worthwhile to read, unless the thread has set a precedent for silliness, or if DanForth and I are trying to teach a noob a lesson. But in OT it's perfectly acceptable for one (no, certainly not little ole me!) to be a postwhore and submit one word/smilie posts.

-about moderators

As I understand it, it's partly up to the community to decide if there should be more moderators, and who should be one...I believe it was in the Apple section where someone asked for a moderator, and the response from Adam or Luke was "well, nominate one then". I've suggested that if needed snorre should be a moderator for the Ferrari, uh, I mean Acer section.

One thing I have thought about is a sticky in the general section just titled “What should I buy?”. Any thread asking that gets dumped in there, and yes, it would grow to 100 pages within a week, but the clutter it would save would be tremendous, and if people checked it routinely then it could be a very useful thread.

Lastly, I’m sorry that you feel like you can’t recommend this forum to your cousin and your female friends (what?!? females on the intraweb!!!), but is it really that bad? I know OT can get dragged down sometimes, and the flame wars are just stupid, but overall it can’t be worse then anything you find on TV…and it is, or can be, an anonymous message board on the internet, it’s not meant to be Teletubbies in the Park or some such thing…

I'm afraid notebook general has become a catchall for new people looking for information, or in MichaelX30's case, starting polls about your favorite poll. The concern for me isn't that someone has a question about which notebook to buy, it's that most of the questions from newbie members are already being covered by recent threads. And it requires no "Search" to find them. The first three pages is sufficient information fodder.

When I came on board with problems regarding my ATI 9700(RIP you SOB), I didn't jump in and create a thread like "Oh sh!t! My 9700 doesn't work! What to do?!". I looked for answers and found exactly what I needed without ever posting a question. I think many of the new members are the younger set just looking to get what they want without doing the work. And the proof that the forum members know better is watching a sucky thread march directly to the bottom of the page with one post - probably a failed bump.

I love doughnuts. I do not have a problem.

The reason why I cannot recommend it to my cousin is because he studies in London (Harrow) and his internet is monitored. He will get into trouble if images like Bahama.Llama's avatar show up on his cache. I hope you understand...I dig his sig...I can stare at it all day but I cannot risk recommending this forum to him and then watch him put on probation by his school.

This forum is definitely not office friendly. HeadFi is office friendly (or was...until some images showed popped up resulting in HeadFi joining the banned list) and I am allowed to browse Toms Hardware, Anandtech etc. (though the forums there get pretty nasty).

I dont understand it...what is so difficult about keeping the forums clean?

I live about 2 miles away from Harrow, went to visit Westminster Universtiy Harrow Campus last week, is he studying there?
What I can say about the forums is although I enjoy the general reading on notebooks, I do see many threads limited for in depth discussion apart from the off topic and the odd thread around the forum.

Yes, some things are not suited for younger audiences. Movies, the internet, again let the parents police it. You are obviously not a parent.

Yes, everyday I manage quite a large division at my company, and if I remember correctly, you're in college, and don't sit in any boardrooms. And it's only an issue if you make an issue out of it. Again, whining to a crowd that you can not possibly sway.

Yes, modern day sensitivity and awareness is crap. I don't need anyone to tell me who I like and for what reasons. If I don't except something/someone then that’s my problem. Don't try and make me care with the "awareness" crapola.

Good, then consider yourself the "Officer Barbrady" of the internet, and now realize that no one cares. You just saved another soul from the sin and depravity of NBF. Maybe the 14 year old's parents should monitor his internet habits more closely.

BTW, is your ' key stuck?

Have you looked at the individual forums? Most are quite clean. I think the toughest sells for completely clean forum sections are DELL, ALIENWARE, and NOTEBOOK GENERAL. Alienware has an awesome fan base, and the crowd that wants AW computers want raw power, raw gaming, and alien heads on their laptops. As such, looking at a cross section of their members shows more radical posting styles with a and a I heart on their sleeves. Dell, with the rollout of the Gen 1 XPS a couple of years ago, also aspire to have a headbanging mentality to gaming, but are still stuck in the logic and workman-like necessity of owning laptops like Sager members - who seem oddly cool about such awesome rigs. AW and Dell guys love to get together and bang heads - lots of cursing and locking of threads. Notebook General is filled with an abysmal number of nOObs looking for answers they could get from any reputable notebook review like Toms Hardware, and many forum members flock there to give their heartfelt opinions about favorite laptops, spilling into a Braveheart-type open battlefield on occasions. which is confirmed by the number of Noob of the Week findings by Off Topic members. However, there are many great topics being discussed and lots of notebooks being talked about that don't have a forum section home yet.

And Off Topic? Well sh!t, it's Off Topic. Closed to non-members, and for the forum at large, you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. I recommend you use the ignore member list.

I second that idea, best way to "police" yourself per say.

Easier said then done, images for Sigs are not hosted on our forums so we can not moderate size at all. All we can do is delete sigs that are extreme, but we normally don't hear to many complaints. If you don't want to see them disable sigs or talk to a mod about it.

Not sure what brodband you are using but it takes me all of about 5 secs to load any page on the forums except the female rating thread for when im err uhh moderateing the content .

I agree there are a pardon my internet slang "Post Whores" on our forums with the one liners, but they are the same people that contribute else where in the forums. If there was an option for character requirement per post we could consider that but once again that will fall into the future revision category.

This is isn't a forum for enthusiasts really. So you wont find more quality threads. Just the same thread about "SPARKLES" or "what laptop should I get" GS, you have been here a long time, I'm sure you should of noticed that by now.
Not a forum for enthusiasts... yeah...
I will Agree with the above stated that there are a lot Noobs here, if this wasn't true the NOTW thread would have died off long ago. However I am pretty sure you will find noobs where ever you go, they are plentiful. If this isn't a forum for notebook enthusiasts then I don't know what is.

I "was" in university...not anymore. You are right about the "crowd" because I dont expect to sway it. However I am not tackling the crowd...I will try and work this issue right at the home base.

The new "link" button is going to make NOTW that much easier.

It is true that quality is more important than quantity and a "sensible" post which is short and precise is more valuable than a wordy rant like this one

But there are times when people post stuff like

PHP Code:
"Ok" "Wow" - I did this recently :( "LOL" "ROTFLMFAOMFG..." "PWNED!" "POTD"
Now I dont know how useful such posts may be. Sure you have to express yourself but how about giving it some thought before the action? Writing well thought out posts with good language can be fun you know
