FORUM ISSUES : I stick my neck out once again - Page 3

People are making some good points here, but I just want to pipe up and say that I'd like to see things stay as lax as possible in Off Topic. I originally came to NBF researching getting a new laptop, but I've stayed after buying it because I like shooting the breeze in OT. I still go to the other forums now and again to offer what I know or ask a question, but OT is great because it's dirty and stupid and chaotic and I like it that way. I've been exposed to all the smut the net has to offer from a very young age and hey, I turned out alright. Sheltering kids is the job of thier parents, and those of us who are adults should be able to continue our OT debauchery.

ways of avoiding excess usage of bandwidth

On other boards, powered by vBulletin, I've seen them institute a 25-character minimum before allowing a post to be submitted - to limit rapid-fire text-message type of conversations that consume bandwidth.

I've also seen a 90 second delay in between submitting posts - to restrict the turning of the board into a chat room.

(if you want to see the unabridged signature then click on the beginning of the sig, otherwise the Reader's Digest condensed version will have to do)

For the life of me, Stu I can't understand why you would want to get Hillary horizontal. But if that's what you really want I'll change it when I get home from work.

How hard would it be to add a new option in the CP where you could turn off only images in the signatures? Heck, give me access to the code and I'll do it... (well, after this stupid dissertation )

They do not bother me if they are well thought out and well written - as in the poster uses decent grammer/spelling and has a specific type of laptop or specific needs in mind.

What gets to me is the seemingly endless supply of posts that look like this:

Where do these kids who couldn't win the Downs Syndrome spelling bee get money to buy a laptop? And what "collage" is admitting them?

I guess these posts piss me off for two reasons:

1) They are so non-specific, not mentioning prospective models, uses, weight/size, battery life, etc, etc, etc - but they expect an immediate response even though they aren't going away to "collage" for a few months. Then they bump the thread if they don't get a response in an hour. Also once you reply and say "Hey buddy, we'd love to tell you what to get, but you need to a) explain yourself better b) figure out what it is you are explaining, as in what are your needs/uses/req's?," they get all defensive or upset and type some more unintelligible gibberish or something.

2) And the main reason they piss me off is that it is symptomatic of how shitty America's youth is. I'm 22 and just graduating from college (err.. I mean collage), so I have fairly recent experience with it and even encounter these kinds of idiots at the university level (I grade papers for English professors). It makes me sick to my stomach to think that our schools and even universities are turning out people who cannot put together coherent sentences, let alone paragraphs or descriptions and arguments. I don't think the original poster should worry about me using words like "shitty" and the like because at least I am articulate. If younger users come to this forum and see my posts and pick up some curse words, at least they'll get with them dose of passable English in their lives for once. In the end they're going to learn to swear no matter what you do - so they might as well learn it here. What you should be more worried about is the litany of ass-spewed garble that makes its way onto this forums via a sea of morons, many of whom are about to embark on the adventure that is "collage."

Well said man! It's scary seeing the horrible spelling and grammer on forums these days. I usually skip over them and read people's replies to try to figure out what they said.

ok...and...........?

I'm not phased one bit.

Anyway, I find it ironic that you babble on about being civil and not "nasty" and then you go and make a stupid confrontational statement like this. It ruins the credibility of your argument as far as I'm concerned.
I mean... f**king concerned.

Roided, what are you talking about? He's was asking the members in a poor example to make the same crude statements and insults in front of a large, muscular person and see if they can survive the day by insulting someone large and angry. Someone like you, but probably not even referencing you. I'm not even sure he knows who you are. What's the beef, sir?

Ya! Take it from roided, he knows what he's talkin' about, he's a master at it.

Theres alot of good points made in this post and i agree with many of them. Yes the search function isnt really that helpful. i have made a few threads after searching and not being able to find anything relevant where someone had posted a link to another thread within the first 2-3 posts. To address the issue about language, Most of the people here are adults or teens, almost all of us have heard anything that is being said here in regards to sex or language. that being said i feel the best way to deal with someone's language being a problem for you is to PM them and politely state your concern or to contact a mod. negative rep accomplishes nothing and neither does arguing in a thread.

With pictures in sigs, not attacking anyone here but i find roided and cacinok's sigs to be a little big. In general most people dont have very large pictures in their sigs, usually its only a large amount of text. Would it be possible to limit the amount/size of text users are able to place in their sigs, maybe to 100 characters. also would it be possible to host an image for sigs much like what is currently used for avatars to create a limit on the file/pixel size used? I honestly have no problems with most of the sigs and would fix mine by making a smaller picture if there were issues with the size.

in general, i have no problems with NBF. I say keep the forums the way they are and i just posted possible resolutions to others concerns. Like kdynamic, I came here to get info about buying my laptop and i still come around for the off topic and gaming threads becuase its a great forum. just my 2 cents, have a nice day everyone

Re - read it dear DanFortH. He was referencing himself. "Before YOU post vile comments in response to HIS post think about saying it in front of someone of HIS muscular stature." It was a veiled threat. If this is not the case then I apologize to Ferrari. Let's hear what he has to say.

Your sig is nearly as big as mine. Yours is slightly longer while mine is slightly taller. Pretty even as far as I'm concerned. (Plus mine is hotter )

It's already there. Under user cp click edit options, then scroll down to Thread display options bar, then look for the box labeled visible post elements. You can check or uncheck show signatures, show avatars, and show images.

@roid, while your and 40's sigs are physically almost the same your's is 175.8 kb and his is 14.
