clicking noise by the right vent and battery issue

Thread Starter
i'm starting to see some strange issues with the battery losing its charge. a typical scenario would be:

the laptop would be plugged in for a few (~8) hours and is completely charged (100%) and then shutdown (NOT standby or hibernate) and disconnected from the adaptor.

then after a few hours, i would turn on the machine minus the adaptor and immediately i would notice that the battery is at ~55%. this is happening consistently the last 5 times i did this. is anyone else experiencing this problem ?

the other thing is, i am hearing a clicking sound by the right vent, it sounds like one of the fans' ball bearings is not aligned correctly and is rubbing against something. i have not noticed this before until recently. any clues or fixes w/o opening up my machine ?

Okay, though you didn't specifically state it, I'm thinking you have the 888E model as I do. The battery is so far a non-issue, but the clicking noise is one I'm experiencing too.

Taking off the access plates, I tracked it the noise down to around the processor area. At first I thought it might have been the TV tuner or possibly the cooling fan for the video card GPU, but I think that is located on a different location on the logic board. I will have to look through those teardown pictures posted to be sure.

What does alarm me, however, is that the noise is not a constant clicking, but the occasional hiss, which leads me to believe it could be generated from a bad capacitor, or something in the voltage regulator assembly for the processor. I'm not entirely sure what the warranty says I can and cannot do in the means of home repairs on this thing, so I didn't remove the heatsink to explore further. If the noise is caused by something involving power distribution, though, it might have some effect on your battery (mine is brand new and otherwise healthy).

In an unrelated note, the cooling fan in the AC to DC external transformer has ceased to function, causing the power pack to overheat drastically, and I suspect it will burn out within the week at these temperatures. Is this something other customers are seeing happen, or did I just get unlucky here?

I have also heard a clicking noise coming out of the fan vent at times and also have had problems with batteries. I have had three batteries in my unit since purchase. The run time went from about 2 hours down to about 10 minutes. It also would never fully charge and if it did it would drop from 100% to 25-30% almost immediately. I never assumed the clicking noise had anything to do with the battery problems. What model of computer do you have?

I also seem to be having this trouble with the battery and the fan. I purchased my computer from another person and then soon after the battery started messing up. The battery doesn't want to charge from a wall outlet anymore but will still run off of the power when I plug it in. I thought it was a problem with the battery itself but it seems to charge fine off of cigarette lighters in vehicles. Also the battery life doesn't last long when it is not plugged in. I was told by one person that it could have been a power surge that damaged the connector to wall outlets. I truely do not know what is wrong with it but it is getting annoying to carry the cords around with it so the battery doesn't die on me. Would there be any way of fixing this problem?

Well, if you bought your unit from another person, the battery is more than likely used, so part of the problem could just be age because batteries lose charge over time. Since it charges fine on a cigarette lighter, I would recommend getting a new power cord... I bet you could ask around and see if any place would be willing for you to buy one and see if it works, and if it doesn't maybe send it back or something (I can't state this for sure, but you may want to email your predicament to some resellers or Sager themselves... even if this is not a possibility, I think buying one would be worth it).

As for others... I don't know what might cause the battery to jump down so far in charge. Try charging the battery to 100%, and then removing it completely from the unit for a few hours and putting it back in to see how much charge it has retained. If it retains 100% or near that, then something is wrong with the interface the computer has with the battery... if it does the same thing as before, then the battery either needs to be replaced, or it didn't charge in the first place. I'm sorry to hear about this problem... Hopefully we can get down to the cause. Best of luck!

Thanks, that will really help.
