I had alot of time to learn the code, and configure the kernel and KDE to run as I wanted, but you may find time at a minimal, so you should look at a distro with you specifically in mind. I have to disagree here. If you want to learn linux you have to get your hands dirty, jump to the cli, break stuff, fix stuff, and just plain get used to a different OS. Using a distro that emulates windows distracts what this persons main objective is. Learning something new. I have never used xandros or have anything bad to say about it. But I do not think its the right tool for this person or someone wanting to learn the ins and outs of a linux based distro. For someone wanting to replace windows with little learning curve sure.
