Nah. Anyway, I wasn't asking if YOU were racist, I was asking if that PHRASE was racist. According to my vietnamese friend ... it means "communist" and sometimes it can be racist.

why cant you run the most recent version 1.02?

btw, one of the advantages of AOM for playing with a range of skills is there is a handicap feature that helps even out the playing field. somewhat similar to a handicap in golf. If you give yourself a 10 handicap, you get a 10% bonus on resource collection. It goes all the way up to 500, for a 500% bonus on resource collection, such that for every one unit of say gold that I collect, you would collect 6. That would almost be free unlimited resources. anyway, just lobbying for my favorite

tally so far

my scientific counting method is to count 2 hash marks for a favorite and one hash mark for each other game mentioned as willing to play.

AOM 7
WCIII 5
EE 1
AOK 1
SC 5
RA2 1
CS 9
unreal 3
demos 3
dues x 2
quake3 1

so the leading contender right now is counterstrike (with my fav Age of Mythology not far behind). Half life has to be cheap as dirt by now cause it is an oldie (Half Life is the game for which counterstrike is the expansion), and I think the Counterstrike expansion is available as a free download (anybody know this?), so that may be a good option.

If I were smart I would figure out how to set up one of those poll vote thingys.

hope we get more responses because so far I don't think any one game has more than 6 people interested in playing it. once we settle on which game, maybe we will get more people willing to give it a whirl than are mentioning each game right now. keep the responses coming people!

there is a free AOM demo available for download and you can find the link to get the download at www.mrfixitonline.com. MFO (short for mrfixitonline) online is not a game, but rather a website. AOM (Age of Mythology) is the game I am recommending. MFO is the website where you can read about AOM and WCIII and a number of other good RTS games. hope you find it interesting/fun.

MFO is another excellent site I check out/read whenever I can.

My vote is for Couter Strike, a great FPS

One thought I had, about WCIII. Although I have and truly enjoy it, the best we could do would be 4 v 4 team games, that is only 8 people, and might leave someone out, unless there are other ways to involve more people. Other thoughts about FPS vs. RTS. RTS are harder for a beginner to learn and be effective with. Especially a complex one like WCIII or (I assume) AOM. So me, as a semi-beginner, would easily dispatch a beginner, but be easily beaten by an intermediate player. This is one of my dislikes with RTS games. There is a science to learning and being effective with them. Anyway, that is why I vote for CS. It is easy, quick, and with a shotgun and a quick bullrush, even a beginner can make a kill before they get picked off, making it easier for total newbies. Whatever is fine though.

valid points. I must say though that I was truly pathetic at Counterstrike the one and only time I played it, even though I had completed most of half life, when I played CS in a LAN game once. I mean I wasn't even a factor. The nice thing about AOM or WCIII, in a teams game, as it would have to be, everyone can contribute something. Especially true in AOM, where you can set the handicaps so the noobs get huge bonuses to offset their lack of experience. But anyone who played would have to read up a little and practice a least one game. overall, I think the FPS games are more total beginner friendly though.

their is also a coop option for AOM, where more than one player controls the same set of units, which can be good for a noob to go along for the ride with a more experienced player.

how many total can play CS together in one game online? anybody know? you can play up to 12 in AOM. If we get 12 people to play in this event, I'll be impressed. How many were willing to participate in the first one?

Up to 20 can play in a CS game, but you can set the number higher so that other people can spectate if they don't want to play or want to watch while they wait for a slot to open.

CS is available as a free download if you have halflife. I just realized something too... Quake3 plays from behind the firewall at UD. My friends here play the Urban Terror mod for it and we host internet games and people from all over the world join up all the time, so I think that could be a definite possibility on some future weekend. Quake is straightforward, lol, even though it won't show off any graphics or anything, I like it. Capture the flag all the way :-) This weekend I won't be at UD, but the weekend after I might host a quake game... I will bring more specifics on that as the time nears. I'll make sure and try it this time before I get everyone's (and my) hopes up. :-)

firewall

good to reemphasize that game that play behind a firewall are preferable to games that do not because the clears out one technical issue that often leads to big delays in getting these things going. like I mentioned, AOM will play behind a firewall. AOK will not. Beeb notes that Quake3 will play behind a firewall. If anyone knows whether any of the other games suggested will play behind a firewall, that would be useful to know in choosing a game for the event. I would be willing to do Quake3 by the way, although I would not be wanting to buy such an old game and I am not sure if any of my friends have it that I could borrow. Thanks for confirming that CS is a free download if you have HalfLife Beeb. Beeb how many people had expressed an intention to play in the first event? Just curious the number of people we are likely to get for the second try. Like I said, I would be impressed with 12, but for all I know you had 20 lined up to play BF1942? If the numbers go above 12, that will push things toward CS, which is the leading contender right now anyway.
Lots of people said they would... about 6 people showed up in some form or another (a post, joined the game, etc). Others prolly showed up and saw the difficulties (or tried and failed and said forget it, lol). Quake would be fun though... I wish there was a way to use bf with the firewall. Oh well. BTW... is it reasonable to assume that if quake works, than anything with the quake engine will work? I don't think that's a reasonable assumption, but if it does, Medal of Honor is a sweet fps... On a different note Alien vs Predator 2 is great with the coop mod :-) So many cool games... SimCity4 just came out... everyone is raving about it.

numbers

well, I will wait until next week before we decide anything, but if only 6 checked in for the event last Saturday (probably some others would have but for the tech glitches), then I think we can assume we will have 12 or less for this one, especially because we are moving away from the downloadable demo everyone can get for free to the less easily available purchase software that works easier for gaming over the internet. Counterstrike has garnered the most votes so far and Age of Mythology is second.

Anybody else other than those that have already posted would like to get in on the Sagerite gaming event?

How many would play if we did Counterstrike?
How many would play if we did Age of Mythology?

I might give it a try, but I haven't played any of the games listed.
Hey beeb,

What's the chance if you gave the Tech desk at UD a call and asked them if they block certain games they'd give you an honest answer?
Oh, they'd give me an honest answer... and I wouldn't need to ask them, I can just dialup and try and join a game with the sager that my own lappy is hosting on the network. If it doesn't work, then I know it's blocked. I could pay $50 to have a static IP address and have them open certain ports for me, but I don't exactly have lots of money to spend, lol. What games are you thinking about? I can try them if you like.

Hey, this is my first post even though I have been reading sagerforums for a while. I haven't ordered my laptop yet, waiting for my taxe return. You can download the quake III demo for free and play online games. I don't know if you can limit who can log onto your game, but you can even host a game with the demo version. Just thought this would help.

cool, if we could get a free demo to play online as easy as the commercial games, that would be the best of both worlds. that might be the best way to go, so people who want to participate wont have to decline for lack of owning the game. where can you download it for free and how do you go about playing it online? have you actually tried this with multiple people downloading the demo and then playing on line no problem, or is this just theory? We definitely need to pick something tried and true, and avoid as many tech hurdles as we can. Quake III I haven't played much or anytime recently but I recall it to be an extremely simple game to play which is a plus. I love capture the flag like Beeb does. hope you can play capture the flag with Quake III. I play capture the flag paintball in the real world, when I am not glued to my computer, and that is incredibly fun.
