Sagerite gaming event, take two - Page 3

You can download the demo at idsoftware. I've played quake III arena, but never team arena. I don't know how many players are supported at one time, but the rest is explained here: http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quak...emo_readme.doc
I hope my taxes come back soon.

I'm pretty sure the demo allows many of the features, but I won't be able to try it out cuz I'm leaving tomorrow to go home (back to dialup, lol). In any case, I will definitely host that sometime, just put on a dedicated server one weekend and leave it up the whole day and night and whoever wants to come can come. :-) Prolly the weekend after this coming one.

my guess is most of the people that may ever look at this thread already have, but I guess we will see what the weekend traffic is like. I hope there are some more Sagerites intereste in this gaming event.

for the AOM fans

if it turns out Counterstrike gets the most votes, those of you that wanted to play AOM, be sure to look for erisalit32 on ESO. I am usually on there a couple of nights a week. Mark me as a friend and message me on ESO to let me know you are a fellow sagerite. I will be sure to invite you into whatever game I am hosting or join yours because I know sagerites never lag and always have green ping.

so much for the weekend traffic idea

no new people showed up on the thread over the weekend, so I guess we've got the results we are going to get. That means this Saturday night, 9:30 pm, we will attempt a second Sagerite gaming event. This time it will be with Counterstrike, assuming I can test everything out and it works during the week. Someone want to volunteer to help me test it out? I expect we will have around 6 people playing from all the voting and assuming some people will forget or have conflicts come up. I would say it is fine if you have friends that also want to play because you need good numbers for capture the flag to be fun and there doesn't seem to be much risk of too many people if Counterstrike supports like 20.

If for some reason we have trouble getting Counterstrike to work as an online event, we will switch to Age of Mythology, which I know will work. I will probably plan a night for Age of Mythology even if the Counterstrike event is a success. That way most of the people who responded will get to play in a gaming event against other Sagerites. I will take post game notes to do color commentary in the forum, which should be fun.

So tonight I will dig out my friend's Half Life disk, which I don't think I returned to him yet since borrowing it years ago, I will download Counterstrike, and try to figure out how to play online. If I have a volunteer, we can try to set up a game 1v1, just to make sure there are no technical problems. I will then post all the info on where to get the download and how to get online and playing. I recommend that everyone who plans to participate try to get online and playing Counterstrike sometime during the week to confirm that you have no technical problems playing online. You may need to do things like turn off virus protection and firewalls to play, even if the game claims you don't need to do those things.

9:30 pm eastern standard time

sorry for the oversight. thanks for pointing it out. unless those participating have a strong preference for a different start time (and tell me so), we will start at 9:30 pm EST, this Saturday

Cool, I'll prolly be there :-) It should be fun... I'm sure I can borrow a halflife-counterstrike cd from around here. Best of luck setting it up!

I'll try and be there too if i can find a half-life cd

btw my bro just bought a 5660-s like me so we might have another one in if he wants to join

I'm in. I'll try not to go too hard on the newbies. Man, I wish OldBuzzard was coming. Him and Beeb could vent some frustrations.
All right, I'll probably be on as either Jammed Gun or denkc. Whos hosting?

I know I am going to be just target practice for people, based on the one time I played this game previously and just got fragged left and right.

OldBuzz seems jealous of Beeb getting a free or greatly price reduced comp, based on what didn't get edited out of his flame posts on the sager for sale thread. what a great way to vent his jealous rage, to play an fps? I'm all for trash talk in these games, but actual nastiness I try to discourage, so maybe its for the best OldBuzz hasn't indicated any interest. too likely to cross the line from friendly teasing and trash talk to offensive and irritating unpleasantness.

I wish I could trash talk for this event, but I'm afraid I don't have the skills to back it up in this game. so if you accidentally walk into my line of fire and I have the presence of mind to shoot, look out! maybe some of my strategy knowlege from playing capture the flag in paintball will help? When we play AOM, I may have more guts to trash talk. at least I can beat all my friends in that game, even though I am only mediocre online.

I'll host if that makes sense. I have a 5660 C w/512 megs of RAM, 2.4 Ghz CPU, DSL, etc. should be a good host situation, but I am always for having the host be the person with the best connection and the beefiest machine, and that probably wont be me in this crowd, lol

The server program for half-life is separate from the game itself, and it's better to run it on a separate machine, even if the machine is underpowered. Connection speed is the main variable. There's even a linux version of the server program, if anyone has a linux box they want to use to host the match. It doesn't take much power to serve the game (the program is very small), but I've noticed problems trying to host and play at the same time.

If we figure out who's gonna host, I'll try to work out some details, edit the server.cfg file, and generally work out the technical stuff. Then, whoever is hosting will just have to click on the program, and it should be up and running. If anyone has preferences for options (I hate friendly fire, but we can vote, I suppose), I can set them up. And we need a name for the server, like "SagerMania CS" or perhaps something less corny.

I thought Counterstrike was as easy to play online as AOM, WCIII, and all the other example games I suggested. I have a linux box, but it is a piece of crap pentium 75 with 16 megs of ram. I just took it out of service as my web server/firewall/router and went with a more conventional wireless router approach. but no no no please God no. tell me we do not have to go through crazy technical crap to get Counterstrike working for multiplayer over the internet. Can't we just play it through GameSpy or something like that? I was not looking to do a direct ip game, simply because I want to avoid having the night bog down into one technical challenge after another. we need a smooth, tested, tried and true approach that everyone can easily join. watchamean problems trying to host and play at the same time? the proud Mary approach for take one of this event was a disaster. we need to do it easy this time. please please please tell me there is an easy way with Counterstrike? when I played it via a lan, it worked fine. I can't understand why it wouldnt work as well over the net, other than things like firewall issues, and needing a real ip address to join (not being able to play from a pc on a network)?

No, it's actually really easy. It's just a server program that you run separately from the game. The config file just tells the game what options to turn on, what the name of the server is, etc. You can leave it all at default and still be able to play, I was just going to customize the name and whatnot, so that other people will have an easier time finding it on Kali, Gamespy, etc. You would just replace your file with the one I send you (its .txt, so it's small). It's pretty much just double click and the server is set up. All I meant was that my computer (crappy) bogs down when trying to serve and play at the same time. Faster computers should have less trouble.

thanks for the reassurance. you had me worried. I will want to test things before Sat. night, to work out any problems, or to cancel if we cant get it working before Saturday. you and I should coordinate the test, making sure we can play a game using the suggested approach. we don't need to take a lot of time, just enough to make sure its working properly. as soon as I download Counterstrike and locate the halflife disk (should happen tonight), I will get in touch with you.

Sounds good. Yeah, Beeb was very ambitious and he got burned for it, so we'll try not to fly too high. You actually can create a game from in the counterstrike program itself (with reassuring graphical interfaces and whatnot), but it's very limiting as to your options. The way I was talking about is not much harder (easier in some ways, because once we work out the kinks, turning on the server is a double click away), and I'm willing to do the legwork since I have some experience. In fact, I have pretty much everything done already, and as far as I can tell it works (my connection is cable though, so it's unsuitable for actually hosting).
