Sagerite gaming event, take two - Page 4

Okay, everything is ready on my end. Tell me when you have Half-Life and CS installed and we'll get to the testing (whenever you want, doesn't have to be tonight). Oh, erisalit32, make sure you install Half-Life in "C:\Program Files\Half-Life\" instead of the default directory, so that the shortcut to the server program will work.

For all those that want to play on Saturday, you will need:

Retail Half-Life (Warez won't work, HL checks your key)
Downloaded Half-Life 1.1.1.0 patch ("hl1110.exe" 82MB)
Downloaded Counter-Strike ver. 1.5 ("csv15full.exe" 121MB)

Just letting you know early because those downloads are pretty big.

thanks for listing where to get the patch and counterstrike, and for letting me know what directory to install Half Life on. I will for certain install it tonight. I got back home from work too late last night. burned too much time posting to this forum

holy heck this is taking a long time to download. I recommend everyone intending to play, be sure to download these files well in advance. it could take 2 hours to download them both. i maybe picked a crappy slow site to download from

done downloading!

okay, I am ready to test this out. I will PM 0110. Anyone else wanting to volunteer to test this out with us, just post here or PM me.

It was 4 times as fast and it was called quadspeed :-) Best of luck to you! Let us know how it works out... I should be free of homework enough on Saturday to join up.

HEy guys, I have run into a little problem. I have come across my version of CS in a rather dubious way. No details, but lets just say that I spent last year overseas. Anyway, when I try to run the update for it 1110, it says I have the wrong language version, but I have never seen any other language versions for this posted for download anywhere. IF i try to connect through Game spy, or directly in CS it tells me I have an invalid library file client.dll in the cstrike/cl_dlls folder. Other research says my hl.dll file is out of date. Anyway, I kinda think a new version of these files would probably solve my problems, anywhere I could find this, or any ideas. If I can't work this out, have a great time.

they had some other downloads at that quadspeed website that might help.

here are some pretty obvious and possibly stupid nontechnical suggestions:
Do you know anyone that owns a legal copy of Half-Life? If you are a student, chances are it would not be hard to find a copy to borrow. If you could just borrow someone else's copy, uninstall yours, install theirs, then download and install the free downloads at quadspeed, then it would be fine, obviously. If you know of no one that has the game, you also might have the option of buying a copy dirt cheap from Best Buy or somewhere in the clearance bin for $5 or $10. again, if you are a student, you could probably put up a sign at school and get someone to sell you a used copy that cheap.

alternatively, I could maybe email you the file hl.dll from mine? what directory would I find it in? could you then just overwrite your hl.dll with mine? I have no idea if that would help.

alternatively, we could just kill the friggin guy that suggested Counterstrike and play AOM instead (just kidding!)

I don't get the dubious acquisition? by last year, when you acquired it overseas, you could have acquired it legally in the US for like $10 pretty easy? why buy a pirated copy when you could buy a legal copy so cheap? I guess maybe cause you were in a foreign country and that was the only option there.

ok my friend is letting borrow his cs cd so I'll be w you guys saturday
post #70 of 99
Bingo on why I have a screwy copy, it was all I could get. As for borrowing it, or buying it, they are possiblities, but I am severly cash strapped, and not a student, I see online that most places are only offering special versions of half life for about $20. Finally, I am downloading the korean patch, I found it and some other different languages. I don't know if they will work. As for emailing the dll files. Maybe that would work, but that would be iffy and a last resort. I am surprised at these probs, cause I have gotten this to work in the past. Anyway, I will keep ya posted.

successful test

thrilled to report we successfully tested the Counterstrike setup

Sat. night I will post the IP so everyone can join. I think it will be the same as it was tonight, but I will post again to confirm.

hopefully 0110 can explain to people how to join the game using the ip

I so barely understand myself that I would be a bad one to explain.

anyway, it was fun with the three of us that tested it. it will be more fun with more people on Saturday. looking forward to it. if you want me to set up the server in the interim so that you can test your ability to connect and get into the game, just let me know and I will see if I can accommodate you
post #76 of 99
Yeah, just "Play CS" then "Internet Games" then "Add IP" and it should all be kinda self explanitory from there.

27106? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they usually 27105?

any chance at setting up another test time

I tried loading up that ip and got further than before, no .dll errors or anything like that. But I get to the page, adn for that IP, there is no game to enter, no connection speed or anything like that is displayed. But that IP is listed in front of me, so it appears that I am connected. SO, if there is any chance of setting up another test run before sat, I would love to have a chance to see if my problems are solved or not. Let me know, either way, it looks like I can give it a shot, and it may work for me. Later

Yeah, DenKC, you got it. And, the reason it is 27016 is because most servers are set up to run on their own dedicated computer. If you use 27015, you cannot play on your own server from the same machine, because the host and client ports would be the same. Erisalit wants to be able to host and play, hence the 27016.

Shlo_mo_shun, just ask erisalit32, and I'm sure he'll set up another test for you and others who want to test the connection. But, we had absolutely no problems (after some minor setup missteps) connecting. I'm in Seattle, and the server is on the East Coast, and I got in the 120's for my ping, which is pretty good for CS.

sure I'll set up another test

I can do another test tonight around 9:00 eastern standard time if that works for those needing to test their connection ability. I will check my email at erisalit32@teufel.us tonight a little before 9pm and if you send me an email saying you want to test, i will set it up for that time, or possibly a different time if you can't do it at 9pm. If for some reason I cant do it at 9pm, I will post on this thread and reply to any emails.

One of the problems I ran into, fyi, was that because I was the host and setting up the ip, in the same screen where I entered the IP I needed to hit "refresh" before I could see the ip in the list. After hitting refresh I was able to scroll down the list, find the correct ip in the list and double click it. that put me in the game. I don't think anyone else will run into this issue, but just in case, I am letting you know about it.

The other issue was I initially tried to set things up from behind a network. I have a home network of just 2 computers. I had to bypass the router and hook my computer directly into the DSL box for things to work. I imagine this will be the case for everyone, but I don't know. If you hope to connect to the game from a network, I strongly suggest you test it out in advance. I also strongly suggest that you turn off any firewalls or virus protection software to connect to the game, and exit any programs that are running in the background, some of which is to reduce lag, and some of which may make the difference from being able to connect and not being able to connect.

we are really hoping to resolve any technical problems that people may have connecting prior to Saturday night, so that we don't unnecessarily delay the gaming start time. some delay may be inevitable, but it at least seems possible at this point that we would start promptly at 9:30 Saturday night. last night's successful test allays my primary fear of not being able to get the game going with anyone. now it is just a question of whether specific people are going to have problems connecting. I hope not but we will be ready to work through whatever issues.

Looking forward to Saturday night. Hopefully, I won't seem like as much of a noob as I am sure I seemed last night. I got in a few lucky kills, but basically I was at the mercy of 0110 and the other guy who I think goes by the name "rjean" in this forum. I had to remember how to shoot and stuff because I only ever played Counterstrike once before like a year ago, and had not played Half-Life in years.

do try to use your forum name when you play. to change your name, you hit the "tilde" key right below the esc key and then type "name [your sager forum name here without the brackets]" and then press enter. other important commands are "Y" to send a message to everyone and "U" to send a message to your team, and "B" to buy stuff. now if 0110 will share his secret of how he is able to spray paint his personalized 0110 tag in the game, I will really look like I know what I am doing. Are we going to be able to play capture the flag by the way? ok this is quickly becoming the great American novel so . . .
Lol, I've never played either game and if I do join it'll prolly be my first time playing :-) Soooo, no one worry, you won't be in last place if I'm playing :-)

As far as the network thing, it's mainly a problem if you are hosting... connecting to games isn't as big of a deal unless the game requires multiple ports to be open. Some of those big RPG games online require like 10 different ports to all be open, so you can't play them from behind a firewall unless you open all of those ports. I think CS works from UD though because I don't think I know ANYONE besides me that does not have it installed on their computer, lol.
