R4000 review needed

Thread Starter
Im considering the R4000 with these specs:
Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
edit

Processor AMD Athlon(TM) 64 4000+ (2.4GHz/1MB l2 Cache)
edit

Display 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
edit

Graphics Card 128MB ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/Hypermemory(TM)
edit

Memory 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB)
edit

Hard Drive 60 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
edit

Primary CD/DVD Drive DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
edit

Networking 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
edit

Primary Battery 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

I realize that the video card isnt the greatest, but I game very rarely. (I have 64mb intel graphics right now) I cant find a review and I really need one to see if this is a worthy purchase. I had a very bad experience with a compaq with it being a POS and a real waste of money. I am tossed up between the fs570, 9300 (truelife, 1.86 pm, 1gb ddr2 4200, 40gb, 6800go), and this compaq with the specs above. Can someone please comment?

Thanks,
jcll2002

Also, what type of ram does the R4000 have?

Yeah! I'm looking into an R4000 as well...
Any feedback from current R4000 owners or a good review, some pictures?

Anyone?

R4000 review

I can get you a R4000 (R4012) review with pics, let me know.

I think more people than just me would ove to see a review.

Questions like how well it performs (CPU, Graphics, etc), is the 12 cell battery bigger than the 8 cell, how about the screen, etc etc.

See the reviews on the zv6000. Same specs. BTW - anyone know how to get DDR working for the S939s?

U mean dual-channel?

Yes - Scottman did a great review of his zv6000. He reported that cpu-z reported only single channel memory with a 3200+ and 2 sticks of 512 RAM. Since the 3200+ is a 939 pin AMD 64, should be able to run 2 channels. Otherwise, what's the point of an AMD 64?

Hi,

I talked to an HP rep and after about 30 minutes of checking he came back saying that yes, from what he initially was told it SHOULD be dual channel but after investigating more he said that the ZV6000/R4000 right now will not do dual channel as the machine is not configured for it. He said there is no information if that will change in the future, but as of right now it is single channel and there is no way to change that.

As for the configuration you got you'll like it. The machine is extremely fast and performs as expected. The only diff in config from mine really is I have 2gb of RAM, but unless you're using photoshop or a rendering program (like I am) you probably won't see a different between 1gb and 2gb of ram.

WHats's the advantage of dual channel memory??

With Dual channel memory you can get twice the memory bandwidth than with a single channel memory controller.

For Example: If a single channel of DDR266 memory supplies 2.13GB/sec of bandwidth, then naturally a dual-channel memory controller (using two modules or sticks of DDR266) can enjoy 4.3GB/sec of bandwidth.

So, theoretically data & other information move from the processor to the memory & vice versa at a faster rate.

is that custom setting or will that be activated through the bios?
It is activated through the BIOS. But many people have said that the laptop runs in single channel mode & there are no other options in the bios. So, HP will need to come up with an updated Bios for dual channel memory to work.

Hey miner ,

what was your 3d mark 2005 score? with that old nvidia card of yours I would love to know the difference the new one makes. Thanks for the effort.
3DMark2001se is the only benchmark that will run. The card(hardware support of DX7) is too old to run either 3dmark03 or 05.

Aquamark3 benchmark: CPU- 9322 GPU- 900 Overall- 8584

any pros and cons from your side?

Pros:
1)The screen is just gorgeous. It is the best screen that I have ever seen in a laptop I have owned.
2) The laptop is very solid eventhough it is made of plastic. No squeaks or rattles even after 8 months of daily regular use.
3)It runs cool. Even under heavy use the temperature just about hits 60C.
4)The cpu (no doubt here)
5)The whole laptop design has this clean simple look which is very much to my liking.
6)The JBL speakers are just awesome. Decent bass and good clarity.

Cons:
1)The gfx card. It is outdated. I dont know why they didnt plonk in atleast a decent card. Especially since the early Pentium 4 versions had the ATi 9600.
2)The paint on the touchpad is getting worn out.
3)The fan runs all the time. Its not such a big problem but still it would have been nicer if the fans turned on & off.
4)The power cord is a bit loose. It disconnects even if I move the laptop a bit.

Quite frankly, it has met & exceeded all my expectations. I hardly play any games on the laptop, so the gfx card was not very important for me.

On a scale of 10, I would give it 8.5, would have been higher if it had a better gfx card.
