Just recieved my XPS yesterday (with an LG Display) and was very dissapointed with the picture quality.
No dead pixels, No light leakage, Plenty Bright and I dont mind the new "glossy screen" - BUT the Colors are not "Solid" - the best word I can find for it is "Grainy" - I wouldnt call it "sparkles" although the whites do look like they "sparkle" a little.
I have a 19" DVI Planar LCD on a Dell Desktop, a 19" Silicon Graphics LCD on another Dell Desktop, and a 15 1/4" Dell Inspiron 8600 Display. The larger displays are both 1600 x 1200 while the 8600 LCD is 1920 X 1200. I cant see any of the XPS "Grain" in any of them...
Today I went to "BEST BUY" and looked at laptop LCD's - I looked at the Sony 17" and a smaller HP that both had the "Glossy Screens" - None of them had any "Grainy" effects either......... The Sony looked the best.
Maybe the XPS that arrived yesterday has some kind of flaw. I contacted the return department and they are sending me out a new machine with a Samsung display to to keep me happy, so I wont cancel my XPS order altogether. The Service Rep was Polite and "Optimistic"; he is "Confident" that I will be happy with the new system that they are sending me... I am not, but I will keep an open mind.
I have been working with high res LCDs for years now and I know when I see a sub-standard display. Even my Wife noticed the "Graininess" on the XPS when she came home from work last night. Those of you that dont see a problem with your current display.........
Maybe it's because you have never seen anything better ??????
Or maybe they shipped me a bad LCD, but based upon all the discussion on these forums I KNOW I am not the only dis-satisfied customer.....
What a Darn shame - The XPS is really built well, - the best I have ever seen Dell do with a laptop (and I have had six of them so far).
So this makes me even more angry - Everything about the new XPS 2 is WONDERFUL except the Display(s). I hate to think about returning this XPS !!!!
I have called Dell and left my feedback.... Yes, IF THEY ONLY HAD THE RIGHT DISPLAY, they would be "back-ordered" for years..........
As far as I can tell (I have only seen the LG) the problem has to do with the pixel matrix, the way the RGB sub-pixels are laid out on the screen as vertical bars (get yourself a 10X Loupe magnifier and have a look).
Meanwhile, If you are not 100% satisfied with your Display, Call dell and make a stink about it, even if you have NO INTENTION of returning the unit.... There is no reason why they couldnt start buying the same LCD that Sony uses (made by Sharp).
I ordered the top of the line XPS and it's all GREAT except for the display..... Bummer
