Look for DVD shrink as well. Those two together have cracked anything I've put to them. And DVD shrink allows you to put a dual layer DVD on a single layer disc.

Note: All of the DVDs that I've copied are ones that I own, or those I've made for friends that own those discs. I don't approve piracy. But I had to put that disclaimer there anyway.

while it is not free I use DVDFab Platinum. It is great and easy to use software for "backing up encrypted and non-encrypted DVD movies that you own".
Not trying to make a plug for a product or anything. I have just had good luck and good results. I have got frustrated with the time and steps required to use the free software. There is also the whole "legality" issues of backing up DVDs. The best DVD backup solution I have used that was free was dvd:rip for linux. After you get the necessary files to decrypt your protected DVDs the software makes it easy, but not everyone uses Linux which is the only catch.

DVDFab Decrypter (made by the same company) is free. Use it to rip any DVD to your hard drive, then use DVD Shrink to shrink & burn, if needed.

"DVDFab Decrypter is a simple version of DVDFab Platinum. It copies entire DVD movie to hard disk, and removes all the protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) while copying."
