R4000/ZV6000 CPU/memory config

Getting ready to order either a Compaq R4000 or HP zv6000. Not sure which is the most cost effective CPU/memory configuration. The upgrade from the 3200+to 3500+ is only $50.00. That one seems like a no brainer but wondering what I'm getting extra with the 3500+. Both are 512 L2 Cache.

Which memory config is better? standard is 2 x 256. Since a single stick upgrade to 512 is only $25.00 this seems to make sense but if the Athlon 64 uses hytertransport, woulnd't the 2 sticks of 256 be as fast and effective as a single 512? Could also upgrade to 2 512's for $100.

Obviously, the 12 cell battery upgrade at $25.00 is another no brainer. Does the 3500+ use more power than the 3200? Are they both S939?

If it is socket 939, then you want 2 identical memory sticks since socket 939 can use dual chanels. Am I the only one thinking the Compaq R4000 looks really good, much better than the ZV6000 even.

And by the way. Biggest no brainer of the century has to be the $19 for 128MB ATI express, IEEE 1394 port, 6-in-1 Media Reader and an ExpressCard/54 slot, over the standard 32MB and none of the additional features! Why is it even an option...

I definately agree about the 200M upgrade. Thought I was thinking the right way with the RAM but wasn't quite sure. I get really confused with these processors since the 64 3200+ and 3500+ seem to come in both Socket 939 and 734. I think that if they have a 512 L2 Cache they are 939 pin. If everything else is the same, not sure what I gain by getting the 3500 instead of the 3200 except that it's only 50 bucks more and if you're buying new - why not!

I'm pretty sure it has the socked 939, as all the CPU's they listed use the 939. There isn't a 3400+ which is only 754 socket. When I get mine I'm going to get the 1x512MB so I can add another 512MB later. I don't know about the CPU yet, either the 3200+ or the 3500+, or If I'm going to get the DVD Burner or not. But I know I'm going to get the HP not the compaq, the only reason I can give you for that is I like the looks of the HP over the Compaq; just a personal perference.

Best Buy has a R4000 listed on their site now. HERE is a link.

Just cancelled my order from Best Buy for that machine. Can't upgrade from them. Can buy a machine with the 12 cell battery and memory upgrade from Costco or Office Depot for the same price. Can get the HP extended warranty direct from HP.

Other than the obvious advantage of processor speed, still not sure about the advantage of the 3500 over the 3200 CPU. Does anyone know if there is any difference in architecture or the way they use memory? Was thinking about the possibility of upgrading to a Turon in the future.

Found this link for AMD processors
http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=45230

If all the zv6000/R4000's are S939 then the 3200+ should be a 90nm core at 1.4v. This should give a better temp and battery life than the 130nm running at 1.5v. With the 3500 (from what I can see), you don't know which core you're getting. If you don't know if you're getting a 90nm core then it doesn't seem to make sense to get the 3500.

Any comments?

Someone who bought a preconfigured at Circuit City reported that the 3200+ is the S939 130nm NewCastle. Unless HP switches, I'm guessing the 3200 and 3500 customs will also be 130nm.

Thanks Scottman, Just did some digging in the HP shopping site and found replacement part specs. http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi...sor&catsel=%3F. Looks like they are S939 but the die size isn't listed (doesn't indicate Winchester or Newcastle). Guess it doesn't really matter since Powernow throttles down to match available power (I think that's how it works). I'll just get the 12 cell battery and live with whatever battery life it provides.

The link you gave is very interesting. So the sempron systems would have a socket 754 motherboard in this notebook. Also, this is the first I had seen the athlons described as "mobile" athlons, and not regular desktop chips. But I'm not sure if these specs are right, because the 3200+ is described as the 1Mb L2 version, whereas at all other places (including HPshopping) it says it's the 512Kb version.

I think that the dual channel chips (S939) up to the 3500 or 3800 are 512Kb L2. BTW - Office Depot has a deal this week on custom configured R4000's with $230 in rebates. I ended up buying from them. Final after rebates was $1132 w/ 3200+, 1G RAM (2x512), 5400RPM 80G HD, 12 cell battery, and all the rest of the goodies. Looks like all the custom configured R4000/ZV6000's are on a sloooow boat from China!

no they aren't My ZV6000 was delivered 9 days from order, just like Office Depot said it would. It took one day to get here from when it shipped....from Kunshan, CN.

The Best Buy deals just aren't good.

My zv6000 just got delivered after being dropped off by fedex at the wrong address yesterday. I have the same specs as yours, but 8cell battery, dvd/cdrw, 15.4 brightview for $914 after rebates. If I end up keeping it and not ebaying it or something, I'll post a review.

Kram - I saw the different prices on HP shopping too. Looks like some upgrades cost more for the HP than they do for the Compaq. The HP rebate was at $50 for the zv6000 and $30 for the R4000 - go figure!

Inteller & Scottman - glad to hear they're shipping these out fast - I'd heard they were all delayed!

just curious, why aren't you all getting bluetooth with these? That has to be one of the best options on this laptop. In my house, bluetooth is a must.

I ordered the bluetooth with mine but not sure why. Maybe to interface with a cell phone or PDA? To be honest, thought Bluetooth was Blackberry (duh) and knew that some cell phones and PDA's use it. I travel quite a bit and just thought this might be something I wish I had someday.
you really should study up on bluetooth some more. It is the best thing ever.

I browse the web using my phone, wirelessly. I also can sync contacts, as well as use the laptop as a voice gateway through my phone to make calls.....all made possible via bluetooth.

Thanks. I really was confused about bluetooth and blackberry. Was told by people at several stores that bluetooth was an idea that came and went. Maybe they meant blackberry. Either way, I'm looking into it now. I allready bought a Belkin wireless router to hook up my desktop and laptop (when it arrives) since both have 802.11g built in.
