5680 Wirelress 802.11g support

Hi all. I just ordered my 5680. And I left off the wireless card option because only 802.11b was offered. Has anyone put a g mini-pci card in their 5680 and gotten it to work. If so, please post the card type and source for drivers.

Meanwhile... I taking bets on a Dell TrueMobile 1300 802.11b/g mini-pci card, and will try their drivers out when I get my 5680. The chip is based on Broadcom's BCM4306/BCM2050 chipset.

Here is a list of resellers who use BroadCom's chips. If Dells driver won't work, I just go down this list and try them all.

Here's someone else who's done something similar:

I dunno, it looks like he likes it to me.

I'm off to bed, then.

No need to take bets..

I have a Dell TM1300, with the Dell CD drivers provided, and it works great! My router is the linksys WRTG54 (something like that.. lol). Oddly enough, that router ALSO has a mini-pci card, and that mini-pci card is ALSO the Dell TM1300 (though, not called that, they ARE the same card).

Regardless, it all works great (and i commonly get a 54 connection.. the lowest i have gotten at home is 18, and at work 1, but, that is on some other network located elsewhere in the building.. lol..

how now, brown cow

if your 5680 does indeed use mini-pci, check out the a+b+g mini-pci solution in my sig...

sonicwind or Divine_Madcat,

Do you guys know if all Truemobile 1300's use the Broadcom BCM94306 chipset? I got a Dell spare parts number J0846 from the Dell community forums, but the Dell accessories website only lists it as Manufacturer Part# N0165, Dell Part# 430-0485. Does it matter?

I cant check at the moment, but i will.

But, why order from the spare-parts area? Dell will sell the cards with no problem from the normal area (unless its alot cheaper....)

WPA capable card?

I was thinking of picking up a truemobile 2300 wireless router - I'm looking for an AP with WPA. Question: Does anyone know of a wireless card that also supports WPA?

I'm sure they're out there, but I don't know where. I'm pretty much set on buying a 5680 without a wireless card, then purchasing an 11.g mini-pci to shove into it. I'd hate to buy the fancy new router with WPA only to find that the card I bought only supported WEP or something...

I ordered the TM1300 off the website for $44.10. OK, just double-checking a few things. The procedure to install it is:

1) Take off the keyboard and heat shield according to Adam's 5680 review

2) Install the mini-PCI card into the slot.

3) Hook up both antenna connectors. The 5680 DOES have antennae pre-wired inside the screen right? Does it matter which antenna gets connected to which connector on the card?

4) Put the heat shield and keyboard back on.

5) Boot up and install the drivers for the wireless card.

Do I have everything covered here? I can't find that thread from a while back with detailed explanations for installing the card. The one where a router was taken apart to use the card.

Ordering the laptop without the integrated wireless option may mean it comes without the antenna for integrated wireless. In that case, installing a mini-pci card (the type used in the 5680) won't do you any good, as it won't have an antenna.

If you're planning on installing a internal wireless card yourself, double-check with your vendor that the antenna will be present.

I had the same dilemma. I ordered my 5680 with the a+b integrated wireless. I won't have access to a network that supports g for most likely a couple years, at that time I can manually upgrade the card to one that supports g.

I think for ease of installation, i would switch 2 and 3. Its easier to snap the antenna on thern put it in.

Phubar- this information is totally incorrect. As pointed out before, EVERY 5680 ships with antenna. Checking with your vendor is also useless, since the ony true vendor is sager. Also, keep this in mind... Sager does not install the screens. They come shipped pre-installed from Clevo. When Clevo makes them, they have no idea as to which ones will have wireless connections, so they ALL get antenna...

Thanks for the advice. BTW, does it matter which antenna goes in which connection?

Thanks for clearing up that comment by phubar. I was pretty sure that all 5680's have antennae, but his post worried me. I actually sent an email off to PCTorque to confirm it Ordered my Porsche Speed Yellow 5680 on Friday

Nah.. the order doesnt matter. THe leads on the card are just Main and Aux.. both cables are identical, and will work perfectly.
