Hey there, Someone put heat sinks on the ram chips, but there are mixed views here. They really need some moving air.

I've been thinking about cutting slots in the ram door, just to add a little air about it, or possibly adding a small (25mm) fan in, for when i'm running the computer proper hard (Ie: lan) But as its not too easy to get spare parts out here in the UK so i've not done this yet.

Was also thinking about modding the fan grills, trying to open them up a bit and use some kind of air-filter material to stop the dust flying right in, but again i've not been able to get the parts easily. (not that i've called up dell to ask mind )

If you come up with any good ideas, let us know

Putting heatsinks would be a good idea. The three fans draw air from the bottom of the computer and are sure to be making some air movement there.

I have to disagree rhetor..the 3 fans dont do anything to the memory chips at all. Some slits being cut would be a good idea if you can manage to squeeze a fan there...but if you make it passive, I dont know how effective a hear spreader would be.

Well im thinking of maybe drilling some holes in the cover or maybe even using the dremel and cutting some slots in it. I have a Vantec Laptop cooler and when the laptop is sitting on it the cover is in the center of the 2 fans so that should push some cool air through there I can always get another replacement cover they are dirt cheap.

what rhetor meant was that with the 3 fans pulling air in from the bottom, cold air is being brought in and air is moving around under the laptop itself. If you had a heastink or some type of passive cooling system, the air that is being pulled in by the fans will in one way or another move by the memory heatsinks. Granted it won't move very much air but anything is better than what we have now. Also MajestacaL when you find and buy a replacement mem cover please post a link I am considering getting one too.

ok guys, i just did my ram cover mod. at idle my temps as fan control reports are: cpu 43, gpu 36, dimm 46, other 44. i have the p4 3.4 prescott cpu, mr9800 gpu and 1 gig of crosshair ram. when i am gaming all the temps stay right aroung 60 wich is pretty good. what i did was: cut 4 1/4" holes on the side of the ram cover that faces the front of the computer then i simply taped up fans 2 and 3 intake grills, this makes the fans suck cool air thru the ram cover. there is your ram mod guys..

how did you fit a fan under there? there's like 1/4" of room between the memory cover and the desk, and what, 1/8" between the cover and RAM?

He didn't put a fan under tha memory. He " taped up fans 2 and 3 intake grills" which means that it has to pull air in through the holes he made in the memory cover. Good idea man.
i dont quite understand how that would make them suck air through the ram area, considering the fans intake is directly on the bottom of the unit.

Maybe the fan below the touchpad?

good idea though.

when you tape up the fan grills it forces the fans to suck air from below the motherboard, between the mobo and the bottom plastic where the ram sits. so if you have holes in the ram cover it forces all the air to be sucked from around the ram, ofcourse not all the air is sucked through the holes i made, i only drilled 4 1/4" holes but it was enough to make my dimm temp drom 15derees and all other temps stayed normal so it's worth it too me. also, the "other" temp that is recorded, i assume that it's the chipset has also dropped about 12degrees. is that temp the chipset, anyone know?
yes the "other" temp is the northbridge.

I have done a mod myself... i took my memory door and with my dremmel I drilled 6 smartly placed holes in the memory cover. Didnt do much but make me feel a little better.

heh, love it whack.

as for closing up other fan holes :S, wouldnt do that myself.
