ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M question

Thread Starter
Has anyone seen this in action, I'm wondering how it does running the usual games (Doom 3, Half Life 2, WoW, etc...) on the low end of the scale (I don't need the highest end in the world). I am thinking about getting the zv6000, but I am on the fence about the GPU. Hoping someone can give me some guidence as to how well it will run games and what it is equal to when compaired to other standard cards.

Thanks

Greg

Based on 3dmark05 scores and info I have seen, it is slightly less powerful than a x300 128Mb (about 2/3 as powerful) and probably equivalent to a non-turbo 9600 se. It should be much better than intel xtreme integrated, but it can't compete with the higher end cards. If you run your games at moderate settings and resolutions, it should handle current games fine.

I already ordered a zv6000 through the office depot deal, and the gpu was the only questionable aspect for me. But since I hardly ever get around to new games until they are several years old and discounted, I couldn't pass up the deal.

My thoughts exactly. Besides Axiom is just a few months away.

Hey I found my self playing mostly older games aswell. Serious Sam anyone?
yeah, you can turn up all the settings on Homeworld and Homeworld2 and it runs them both like a champ.....no slow down at all!

xpress 200m is no slouch. It performs well enough. It is just not the most powerful out there. And again many people may try to confuse you but it is dedicated memory with additional integrated memory options(128mb+128mb)

Has anyone played Battlefield 2 w/ the XPRESS 200M? If so, what settings? I'm thinking about recommending a R4000 to a friend.
go ahead and recommend it .I didnt play that specific game but I played nfs2 at all settings high (at only 128mb) NO flicker watever and the game played very smooth. The drivers are still not exatly good but performance may increase a bit at a later point of time with updated drivers and software from ati.

PS: dont expect blazing performance. It is just about an average performer.

I've read that the 200 is about the same as the X300 but with only 2 pipelines... Supposed to perform well though.

I found it ok for playing games as long as they were games like bf2 (it still ran it on the comp I tested it on, but not well) but for older games it worked fine. Even Far Cry worked pretty well. I forget the exact specs of the laptop I was using, though. I would say if you are a serious gamer, you don't want this, but if for the average gamer it would be ok. Also, if you are looking to play BF2, DO NOT get the Xpress 200m IGP, get the 128 dedicated with up to another 128 shared. Don't expect to run BF2 on any spectacular settings though.

Hey I have a problem here. I use windows media player and intervideo DVd to play movies. BUt these softwares dont recognize my GPU at all. Playing is smooth and excellent though.

any suggestions?

I tried playing Doom 3 with this card set at 32MB of shared memory and the game was unplayable. Should I increase the shared memory to 64MB of 128MB? I also found the ATITool utility to overclock the video but have yet to use it. Don't want to fry the chip......anyone use this? Here's what the log states after being ran:

2005-07-16 16:24:58ATITool v0.24 started.
2005-07-16 16:24:58Detected GPU Chip: 0xFFFF (FFFF), 8 Pipelines, 4095 MB
2005-07-16 16:24:58Temperature monitoring: not supported
2005-07-16 16:24:58Could not locate ATI BIOS - assuming 27.000 Mhz Ref. clock
2005-07-16 16:25:11Find Max Core started...
2005-07-16 16:25:25Find Max Memory started...
2005-07-16 16:26:23Clocks set to: -1.#J / -1.#J
2005-07-16 16:26:48Application terminated.

Too bad I can't monitor the temp. According to ATI the 200m has a 350MHz core and has 128 bit memory. I would assume it can be overclocked but not much due to it being a laptop.

Anyone with other ideas to increase performance?

Oh, yea, this is my first post....what a cool forum!!! Picked up my first laptop just 2 days ago. It's a Compaq Presario M2000. Picked it up for 549.99 before tax and after the $30.00 rebate. I have hosed the O/S, reinstalled, and plan on reformatting to install Win XP Professional in a week when I get the software.

Thanks for any responses - C_Fletch

Yay you guys are freaking awesome. Devarshi...what can i say...you are the man...

Finally somone who gives me info. I've got an R4000 and i wanna get a memory upgrade. Can you guys help me out with your experience?
Just one suggestion man.

go for minimum 2gigs. you would want to use the ati Gpu with the extra 128mb memory to 256mb and that ram will help.

Secondly get a ddr400 memory as dual channel is not supported but get two identical ones. maybe if it is supported in the future you will be at an advantage.

Congratulations on your purchase.

The 200M is crap, but some of the other xpress 200 cards are fine (as someone posted- the Intergrated version of the 200(M) is poo). I know because I have one of the lesser versions of the GPU and it's nothing stellar.
Its just meant for an average performance. the card is still not fully supported as it has jsut been released. I assume the performance will go up a bit more.
I just saw that Fujitsu is about to release its new 13.3 in LifeBook S2110 with the 200m. It's bound to be better than the ati 9700 in the vaio 360 rite?

I have the Xpress 200M in my laptop, but haven't realy tried it out. I saw a commercial earlier for the game Fear, and I checked it out. I might be able to squeeze by on the minimum settings. Has anyone tried this game out?
I'm pretty sure Fear won't work with a 200m. It's has the highest requirements of any game out right now, so you need a pretty good video card to play it at all.

Even powerful cards like the 6800 can't run Fear on full settings.

Try the demo and see how it does.
