100% CPU Usage HELP!!

Thread Starter
No idea what the heck is going on... the last 3 boots my cpu usage has been 100%. System is at 97% and three other things at 1 each.

Prior to my last successful boot, I installed PC-cillin. I thought this was causing it, but when i try to uninstall it tells me I can't when the program is running. The problem is, my CPU is so drained I can't open anything to change the settings/exit!!

Other info...
I had Mcafee virus running...was able to close that
Closed AIM
Closed powerstrip
Closed nVidia console
There's bascially nothing left in my tray

I'd try booting into safe mode and uninstalling from there.

Do a system restore to before you installed the app.

Thank you so much!!! I restored to before I installed PcCillin and everythings cool now.
Has anyone else had this problem with this program?

Edit- I may have spoken to soon. Its obviously better than before, but the comp is still very slow. System idle hovers around 60-98% of CPU.

This might sound crazy and completely unrelated, but try jumping into BIOS and resetting everything to defaults. My lappy was having problems coming out of suspend / hibernation state a while back; the machine would run really, really, slow with the fans flat-out... it'd take like 2 minutes just to have the characters I typed appear in the login dialog, for example.

Resetting BIOS to default values fixed this for me. Might be worth a shot?

That's a good thing. The higher that number the more idle the processor.

the system still jumps to 100% CPU usage sometimes and everything freezes up momentarily. I really dont have much running (couple firefox windows and AIM the last time it froze like that). for some reason things are just not running as smooth as theyre supposed to. I ran a virus scan and it didnt find anything. any ideas?

Maximize your task manager window and post a screenshot of the Processes tab

I appreciate the help

Seems normal to me. And how about the Performance tab - does the cpu usage bar there says 100% or other high number?..because according to what you posted it should be around 17%

At this instance, the CPU was fine, but like i said for some reason it spikes to 100% sometimes. Like when I open a few firfox windows and say WMP 10. but it should do that; thats not much strain.

I have a 9200 (Dothan 1.6Ghz) and i've had this happen once. It was stuck on 100% and the CPU temps hit 65C before I shut it down. Also, my CPU usage will never drop below 10-13% no matter what applications I close. Seems a little strange to me that it never drops to 0%

Spyware, Adware, Trogans and similar are the first things to look for.. ALSO BLOW THE FAN VENTS REGULARLY... Dust will Kill you laptop....
How do I blow in there without messing up something? I am afraid the fan will spin up too fast and break. Does anyone else with a 9200/9300/iXPS2 blow out the fan vents and if so how do you do it safely?
put a tooth pick in there to hold the fans still and spray away.

Are you connecting using wired or wirelessly? If wired reseat the cable and try another port. If you are connected with a wireless card try switching to a wired cable and see if the problems still exist. The problem looks network in nature. It could be your router or cable/DSL modem. Could be a network adapter problem. What results do you get?
