cheap 12" laptop - Page 2

The iBook might not be a bad option. I think I've seen them in the neighborhood of $900-$1,000 from Amazon. Just gotta get used to the Apple. I believe they are rated pretty good also. You may want to wait for the new Averatecs if you area willing to spend a little more(still unknow pricepoint). The 10.6 and 13" widescreen models. The hard drive, memory and cpu, are all accessible for future upgrades.

thanks
i have just seen a German review which mentions 2 averatec subnotebooks both having the battery lifetime at 1,5-2 hours (uniwill 223ii0 in the same review has 3,5 hours).

PS: Recently I had all the same difficult choice: apple ibook, PB, dell, averatec (sony, samsung excluded because of their price) and I ended up
with uniwill 223ii0. Maybe it is not the best choice because I haven't tried
new 12" MSI Megabook with Sonoma and Turion.

My main problem with uniwill 223ii0 is it loud fan (MSI Megabook probably has no better). Another problem is its plastic case which does not feel robust (unlike MSI's magnesiun case). I had also a problem with keyboard which I did not like, but the assembler firm (in Germany, NEXOC) has replaced it after my complain and it's OK now.
the msi is pretty quiet - i have the s250 (same chassis as the 260), the fan on the 260 will prob run more often with the hotter CPU (s250 is celeron). So if you're worried about noise, i wouldn't worry about the megabook.

averaging about 3 hours on the 3-cell battery, using it at full capacity (paintshop pro, dreamweaver, etc).

My advise is, don't ever get any Dell, except with at least 40% off, perhaps even 50%.

Hi! I would love to see some definitive proof of that statement. You seem a bright fellow, surely you aren't like these jakelegs that mouth off with nothing to back it up except suspiciously vague anecdotal evidence...are you?

I would give you the benefit of the doubt as well, that you are a reasonable person to deal with, and will respond to logic an evidence. Anecdote, my friend, is what ultimately stands behind every bit of evidence in regard to the quality of a product or company; any statistical evidence is simply the aggregation of many individual anecdotes. Here are some of the evidence I would trust that you would read before responding again; all real people with real problems. Lest you complain that it's just a few Dell haters that are out to get company, I have included a sufficient number to dispel doubt in any reasonable person. And you can email the original author of some of these complaints if you would like to check out their validity, since some of them were kind enough to include their email or address. I can provide a lot more, if you feel necessary; however, not tonight, since I do have much work to do before the morning.

While Dell's customer service has traditionally been fair to good, recent couple of years have seen slippage in the area as well:

But how do these relate to Dell's overall sales? Are these the total complaints out of the millions of Dells sold? Do you know or did you just cut and paste some complaints?

The vast majority of compaints are never recorded, from any company; these are just examples.

...and the vast majority of satisfied customers never bother to find a web site to post on either.

OK, let's not harp over this anymore, since there is no way for either one of us to conclusively show the validity of our position, let us just each hold on to our opinions. There's no need for any more flame war.

Good night, and take care

Excellent! So you'll no longer be jumping into threads and making unsupportable comments about something you admit you cannot prove? Thank you for that.

Some of those complaints are pretty funny. Did you read about the cop who "thought" he had purchased Complete Care (even though it wasn't on his invoice, nor did he pay for it) and then complained when Dell refused to replace the display he had smashed?

My favorite was the lady who's "name was wrong" at the shippers and was trying to sort it out with Dell who kept trying to tell her she was someone else and this went on for days and she was just so mad and Dell was so stupid. LOL, one wonders why she didn't just ignore that order and reorder in her name. (this one was so nonsensical that it had no credibility at all. )

very true carver..its only the haters coming out from under their shells to do what they do best...

pass the haterade

I liked the first article where it had nothing to do with dell. The person says that they are Dell computers, but when you click the link and read the article, it just mentions "computers", doesn't say what brand. All of those links are just people's experiences. I am sure that someone has said something bad about any brand computer.
