Laptop/Desktop?

post #1 of 9

Hello to all,

I am new to this forum. First-This is a great site/forum full of informations and great reviews from all over.

I've read the reviews for the 889x and 56xx. These laptops are sweeet.

I'm a graphic designer/web and digital photographer. I am considering a laptop (889x) but would like to find out if this will do the job when compare to custom-built desktop (equivalent configurations).

Sure there's pluses and minuses to both:

Laptop = portability to and from studio shot
Laptop = less desk space
Laptop = convenient on site photo slide show
Laptop = When ever I need it, it's w/ me

Desktop = more power?
Desktop = less $$
Desktop = accurate color from monitor?

Please don't flame me for asking these ?s and concerns.
I am in need of some info. , suggestions and/or comments from those of you who are in my line of work. What are you using and why?

any info. much appreciated.

These are valid and good questions!

I think the desktop solution will be cheaper, of course; and the monitor issue is moot, as you can connect to an external monitor (say, when in studio) for color-matching.

As for portability, the 8890 is not the best on battery life or weight, so be warned (however, power does come at a price). Maybe it's too much power for what you are doing? Photo editing/touchup and web design isn't that demanding anymore (like CAD is no longer demanding). You will probably be able to use any of the models PC Torque offers (4xxx, 56xx, 88xx) or even the 3750 that Sager is starting to carry (though it has shared video memory, so it's not a gaming machine).

I think if you have the resources and the understanding that the weight/heat/battery life are what they are, then a Sager will make an INCREDIBLE mobile studio (and stationary studio, too). Plus you can have fun with more demanding games during "down-times"

As for Processing Power, a desktop unit is not going to be THAT MUCH more than a high-end 8890. My laptop is more powerful than my desktop (granted, they're both aging now). However, my 8887 still kicks major butt in DV editing and DVD-encoding (Software MPEG), so the power is definately there.

aNY suggestions ?

myrkat

and thank you for the response.

I am in favour of a laptop (dont know which is best for me yet) due to the fact that I am always away from my desk (photo shoot on site) or road trips. There was even a time when I was hiking to the top of a Mtn. w/ all my camera gears (digital of course) and wished I had a laptop to store/backup my pictures. Sure I can get backup drives or more CF cards but I opt not to go w/ that.
I've missed some great shots due to corrupted CF cards and limited space and at times waiting for the right time (outdoor photography) can be boring. Having alaptop that I can carry w/ me in my backpack along w/ my camera gear would be great. Oh yeah, weight is a factor too. I just can't decide and dont know, quite honestly, which is best for me.

And there was time when I'm out camping(photo assignment) and wished I had something to entertain me ( say playing a dvd or something).

I would say get a cheap centrino then, you really dont need the procseeing power u need the battery and portability

I'd second Loki's suggestion. You want light-weight and long battery life over performance... a centrino solution might be ideal.

Granted shared video sucks, but it's not an impossible thing to deal with with something as non-demanding (video-wise) as photoshop.

Have you investigated those portable media-card backup/HD things? I think they're called media vaults or something. Basically a card-reader/HD - some have video-OUT so you can do a slide show (instead of using the camera).

For entertainment, get a PDA-type device. The upcoming TapWave ZODIACs look promising...

It is a tough call... I would (and have) gone the laptop route, but I did NOT need portability like climbing a mountain, I just needed a VERY EASILY RELOCATABLE desktop. Sager provides that.

"Myrkate" is my twin sister, eh?

I think the Sager 3750 may be worth checking out (if you want the famous Sager support). Other centrino-based lappies are available, too.
