Firmware upgraded!

Thanks to the Pete's suggestions, I upgraded my GWA-4080N to a GMA-4080N, using the OS35 firmware on the D.Brother's website.
I've already burned 3 DVD+DL successfully.
Thanks a lot mate!

HERE IS THE LINK TO RPC1 http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GSA4080N

He sent me the original with flasher (not one of these flashers ) and did not post it (the original). So, if anyone wants it just ask.

Same disclaimer as Pete: I am not responsible for anything that may or may not happen. I have yet to try, but will soon.

Goodluck and cheers

If I don't get to you to day, i will try to get to you by monday.

Hey Fizi will you host it? it is only 592k.

I think that installing a new firmware will not void warranty, because you don't do anything with the hardware... you only change the software.

Well wouldn't it be the same thing as flashing the bios? I don't think that they like that. It is not an official firmware, it is an altered firmware. So it is still debatable, they could deny warranty services becase of this because we are not using the equipment in the intended manner. However, we could say that we installed an new DVD-burner, which is allowed.

This is why i wanted the orignial firmware, so when i send my computer in to fix the hinges i can revert to it, so there will be no problems.

Flashing your firmware on your DVD Drive will void your warrenty. It's just like flashing your Bios. The question is will eMachines notice your DVD Drive has different firmware? Not a chance unless you send it in for a repair on the DVD Drive itself and then only if they run some diagnostic software on it and notice the firmware version # is different otherwise I bet they just pop it out and throw in a new one since its 30bucks.

Can someone send me the firmware? Compman55 at aol dot com.

Also do you think this will also work on the emachines 4040N drive?

The link to The Dangerous Brothers website and all the instructions to download and install the right firmware are in one of my earlier posts... And no it will not work on anything else than a 4080n.
compman, while browsing through that site there were many people with 4040ns.
there only seemed to be two versions, the GCA and the GWA, from what I could tell/remember the GCAs , I think, were not +/- drives, whereas the GWAs were. There are also fourms there to help you out. TDB does have the Arima/Emachines Frimware on their page and I read that many were able to cross flash the GCAs and GWAs successfully.

I don't what drive you have, but here is a link to a thread about the crossflashing and benefits

Nice job!! I just ran the upgrade (running Nero Info Tool before and after the update), and yes, I can burn to DL media now.) Thanks for the work on this - I would never have even thought about updating the firmware to gain DL burning.

All DVD RW + and - can do dual layer. Rahter if you MUST make a copy of a Movie or something larger than 4.7 gb, don't flash your drive during warranty. In fact it is safer and cheaper to use one layer DVD R plus or minus blanks in my area than dvd -9 types.
I have OC09 for firmware. But found the specs this Drive can burn at 8 times for DVDs and 24x for CDs. Please do not void your warranties.

----Rich
The test is clone DVD not Nero. To get Nero to tell you what it thinks, put in the blank, start Nero Burning....kill the grey menu and click on the Drive on top.

Not all DVD RW + and - can burn dual layer, but all can read. I tried before using the upgraded firmware and it would not see it as a dual layer.

Yes, we might be voiding our waranties, that is why I waited until i got the original firmware. With that I would be able to flash back to the original. Also if worse comes to worse, and i need to send it in to Gateway, and for some unforseen reason i could not find the original firmware to flash it back to, i would purchase a cheap DVD drive for it and say i upgraded it. I belive the CD/DVD rom, on RAM slot, and the HDD are allowable upgrades for end-users.

The DVD 9 are very expensive, but are sometimes worth it. A blank DVD R costs around 1-2 dollars for a name brand, depending on quantity and packaging ( ie spindle or jewel cases), whereas a DVD -9 DVD costs upwards of $5 some can get to $8. But if you want to have backups of all your movies, with extras, you need DVD 9. Movies are not the only thing the DVD 9 makes easier. To me it is easier to use 1 or 2 DVD-9 to back up my systems, rather than having 4 dvd disks.

Your specs are right along with ours, except that ours now write DVD-9 discs. I have not found any problems with mine, or else I would have stopped sharing the firmwares. I have not heard of any problems with the firmware, or else i would have stopped sharing them. If anyone has any problems with the firmware please tell me, I won't be able to do anything about it, but I could warn others.

Wrong. As has been stated in this thread already, only some +/- R burners can do DL - it depends on if the laser in the unit is capable of switching between layers. Of course single-layer discs are cheaper - that's a given. And DL discs are much better for backups because you use fewer discs - meaning less hassle in terms of swapping discs back and forth. And our drivers burned at 8X DVD, 24X Cd before the firmware flash, just as they do now. DL burning hasn't hit 8x yet, but that does NOT affect single layer burning.

I have 0c09 firmware and no dvd ram. But 8x dvd write/24 cd How do Know if I have DL?

"Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video using compatible DVD+R DL media"

That is what EVERY notebook in the class I bought says. This is an HP.

Note:both HP and Nero report this as a DL burner. Take note of the firmware.

And that is for all DVD formats that are supported by the burning software DO NOT use SONY on a LG DRIVE etc. The big tester is Nero 6.6.13 and up.
What kind of drive is it? GMA, GWA, GSA, etc.

You have nero correct? if so use Nero Info Tool, it will scan your drive and tell you what it can and cannot write and read. The bottom set of check boxes will show supported write features.

Make sure that you look at the write features not the read, as all dvd rom drives read Dual layer.

I remember seeing that the 0c09 firmware does NOT write Dual layer when i was researching the firmware to begin with. The i remember is because while searching using the term 4080n, Mostly 0c09 firmware threads popped up and I told them what I we were doing with our gateways and they followed. Making me believe, since there was already and RPC1 for the 0c09, the the 0c09 does not write Dual layer.

HP's come with DL. For DVD-R and DVD+R ht-st-dt or whatever gwa 4080n's. They do NOT supply the software for this because outside of copying a DVD who needs it?? Nero 6.6.0.13 is the first new version to even support this and reads my drive as it should. DVDFAB will use this also but again it's not necessary. I was told it was up to the software I use. And I proved it the other night by burning a DL DVD copy with DVD FAB. Of course with that software dual layer has no perpose well it had a tab if I wanted to do dual layer as in copy a DVD sans all protection schemes. Sonic software and similar as well as older versions of NERO prior to 6.6 could not burn dual layer. Now it can. I assume this board is anti warez and such then I can't tell anyone where the software is to prove without flashing you too have DL as I was told once again it's mainly in the software. As for the write results with my stock burner from nero I can DL dvd-r and dvd+R.
DVDRW's maybe it was in a weird place but the industry wants you to buy a home recorder and many of them lack stereo off air and I don't think any will copy a DVD movie DL wise. Just a 4.7gb at 2-4-6 hours.
Thanks for the firmware page, it is wrong but once again they don't give you OEM software that do DL for one reason: DVD copys.
Basically without software to make DL copies flashing is in my humble opinion not worth bothering with. So be careful with that folks until Longhorn comes out. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_file.php?si...e=4080NC09.ZIP
For original oco9 firmware BUT your drive MAY REPORT you have 2 changes left.
