to test your memory. There is an ISO there for creating a bootable CD if you don't have a floppy available. Boot from the CD and let it run a couple of passes. 1 error = FAIL. The windows memory diagnostic is also pretty good. Again get the CD ISO. The point is to test the machines hardware without the influence of Windows and/or device drivers thus the bootable CD. http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
If you have a broadband connection this it is probably worth going ahead and downloading this. http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/
it has the memory tester along with a billion other really useful apps preinstalled with an easy to navigate menu tree. If your HD ever crashes or your OS corrupts you're going to be wishing you had this.
To adjust VM (also called a pagefile) right click on my computer > properties > advanced > performance settings > advanced > change. People will suggest different size pagefiles for different apps. 2GB of RAM is a ton of it so I wouldn't go crazy with the page file. a min/max of 2048 is plenty. If you have a smaller HD drive I would go smaller such as 1024. Again these numbers are a bit open for debate. The point with that much ram isn't to get the magic size, it's to set the pagefile to a static amound so it doesn't fragment. For that reason you'll want to defrag the HD before making any changes here.
