fix typo in the specs
Hi all, I'm new to this forum but have been looking at buying the M680 for the last couple of weeks and have been following this form. Thanks all for your great comments... but special thanks to zecob. I wouldn't have had any idea that it was possible to get such a great discount just from a simple phone call.
Well, he was right. Just 30 minutes ago I made a $545 phone call to Gateway. I tried Gabriel's extension but as expected he was on the line so instead I just waited for the next available salesperson who turned out to be Zennie (were his parents hippies? I should have asked him). Very friendly, typical salesperson trying to be nice and make you feel comfortable. BTW, his extension is #51991 and his email "zennie.mcdonald AT gateway dot com".
I was after the M680XL with 3year warr.,XP Pro, the 2.0ghz 760 p-M and 1GB of RAM which priced out on gateway.com at $2,394. I told him initially that my budget was <$2000 and I was also looking at a Dell 9300 (which I was) that was similarly spekked out for almost the exact same price, and that I would get the one that was the best deal. I also told hiim that I had this dream of getting 2GB of RAM but that it wasn't in my budget, but if he could get somewhere close I might be able to make the exception.
So we added the 2gb RAM upgrade to the price, plus taxes and shipping to CO. The new price came to $2,745. He said, so do want to just go ahead and purchase that? Yeah... right. I said, "well, that's way over my bugdet. I can't even consider going that high". He said, "well I can talk to my manager... is there a number that you can give me that would be good enough for you to buy today"? So I told him to just hold on a second while I decided on a number and then after a minute or two I got back on the phone and said that I would buy it for $2200 shipped to my door. He said he'd be back in a couple of minutes and sure enough when he got back he said it was a done deal. His manager approved a $545 discount on the system.
So, what does $2200 buy you at Gateway?
2.0 Ghz P-M
2 GB DDR2 533Mhz Memory (two 1gb dimms)
80GB 5400rpm HD
Wireless b/g Card
128MB ATI x700 Video
17.0" WSXGA TFT Active Matrix
8x DVD+-RW Burner
8-Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Windows XP Professional
3 Year Warranty Parts/Labor/NoOnsite
Estimated shipping date on this is May 19th (ie. 15 days from today) so we'll see if that happens. Thanks zecob for the tip. Others if you're thinking about buying at Gateway don't even think about ordering directly from the website.
BTW... today when I was configuring my 680XL for the 5th or 6th time I noticed that there is not even an option any more for 512 MB RAM... their price includes 1GB of RAM. If I'm not mistaken that just changed this week... or at least since the first time I priced out a 680XL. Also, if you're interested in 2GB of RAM you can forget about the Dell 9300... it costs $750 extra to go from 1GB to 2GB, whereas Gateway charges $300.
