5660 Additional RAM

Thread Starter
I've had the 5660 from PCTorque for nearly nine months now, and the machine's still going strong with no issues or problems - even though the machine goes through real heavy stress; e.g. it's typically on without rebooting for 6-7 days at a go, and I've been playing Star Wars Galaxies on it - a lot.

Got a question - what kind of RAM upgrades are possible for me? I can't remember whether I got the 2 sticks of 256 MB RAM, but I'm gonna assume I did. I'd like to go up to 1024 MB - say, 2 sticks of 512 MB will do nicely. Where can I find a good bargain for these, and which ones will work with the 5660?

Thanks.

Just lift off the keyboard and check if both your slots are occupied. If they are then you might wanna replace them both. If they arent then you might wanna get ONE 512MB stick instead of two - that way you minimize your loss (because the 256MB sticks wont sell for anything or to anyone...)

Lift up the keyboard following Adams instructions in the 5660 review...

And it sure is good to hear from you again "Wizard" !!

The main place we recommended is www.crucial.com if not going though Sager or a reseller direct. The problem you can run into is incompatible RAM especially as it becomes an older standard. I haven't seen any issues with Crucial though to date. It's SODIMM PC2100...200pin.

Thanks for the replies - I'll check out the Crucial site, and also whether my 5660 has any memory slot free.

Adam : Just one more question. My next notebook will almost certainly be another Sager, likely from yourself again. Does the the RAM I'm getting work on say the 8890? Is it possible to configure a 8890 without RAM then? I'll likely install these RAM into the 8890, and replace the old ones back into the 5660.

The new Sagers use PCI3200 RAM which is DDR-400....our Sager 5660's use PCI2100 which is DDR-266...

I am guessing they will fit the same slot (maybe not) but the 5660 RAM will smother the rest of the system performance.

My suggestion to you - Sell the bugger and get a new one...tswatimdoin

Anyway, as soon as i can get my hands on the game card, ill be in swg myself. Which i wanted to ask you, how smooth does it run on your 5660 (as i have the same)? Whats the specs on your laptop too and settings for swg?

Well, I've been playing SWG for 3 weeks now - and the game's really quite playable on my 5660, although I certainly cannot enable all of the graphic features possible. E.g. viewing distance is limited, no shadows, simplistic character models, shading effects on water set to low quality, and I disable all peripheral flora and fauna graphics. Even having removed all these stuff, the game still looks reasonably good, and I get frame rates of around 20 to 29.

Having said this, the amount of HDD access is a major issue. Whenever I move from one part of the area to another - and this can occur frequently when I'm in a large city (e.g. Naboo), the HDD will spin like crazy attempting to load the next group of very large texture files. It seems to me a RAM issue; hence I've been inquiring here about getting more RAM.

My specs - 2.66 GHz, 512 MB RAM, ATI9K, stock 5660.

5660 Ram

I am attempting to upgrade the RAM on my 5660. I have opened it up and found that it has one stick of 512 (200 PIN DDR 266 SDRAM is what i got off the stick). I went on crucial and searched the product and all i was able to find was 184 PIN DDR 266. If theres anyone that could point me in the direction of what i need for sure i would greatly appreciate it.....Thanks.

First off make sure you do not get 184 PIN SDRAM I dont think any 56xx takes SDRAM you want 200 PIN DDR. Also you need to know the speed of the ram for this model it is PC2100 also called DDR266. Also size is important your laptop won't take more than 1024 mb of ddr266 ram. The last issue is compatability I cant help you here but I sure someoneone the forums who has a 5660 can. Good luck with the upgrade
