Ok now that the shuffles have been out for a while, I'm wondering what you think of them. Do you have one? I've been looking at the 1 gig shuffle because it's enough memory, small, and simple. I don't want to spend a grip, and I don't need anything fancy. I also really like that it doubles as a USB jump drive. One thing I'm wondering about though, does it have any security or copyright protection "features" that check your mp3s? Someone said it did and that turned me off to the idea of one. Also, even though i went into the apple store downtown and asked, no one could tell me about battery life. Anyone have experiences with the thing they'd like to share?

shuffle: don't bother
I got one as a gift for my birthday. Frankly, I like to choose my songs, so the whole shuffle thing is totally uninteresting to me. What's more, you can probably purchase a comparable (albeit less stylish) flash player that has both a shuffle function and the ability to choose songs for the same price. I see you used the word "grip" above
All I have to say is: The ipod shuffle hella sucks! That's right, you know where I'm from

kd, the shuffle is awesome...
i have the 1GB version and it is perfect for what i want, i.e. running, going to the gym, walking to class, etc... granted it is not designed for you to pick and choose your songs as you please but rather "shuffles" through each one, or plays straight through... i throw on a bunch of cds and let them play through and i couldnt be happier... get one...

I would say exactly the same thing. I don't typically listen to a single track and flick through them, I'll listen to an album or a playlist that I have set up before hand. The shuffle can play in shuffle mode or "normal" mode.
My sisters shuffle has fairly good battery life but really the best thing about it is that it has a rechargable battery that just needs to be plugged into a USB slot. My Creative Flash player tends to eat AAA batteries (tho it does get a good runtime - 20 hours or so) and replacing them can get really irritating.
The only copy protection stuff apple has on it is to stop you listening to songs that someone else has bought from the Itunes store, as with most other mp3 players.
Finally, find me a decent 1GB MP3 player for $150.

I love mine. I've got a 3rd gen 20 gig, and now the shuffle. I rock the 3rd gen in the car and I use the shuffle when at work or college. I have always listened to my 3rd gen on shuffle mode, same with all my songs on my computer. So this is right up my alley. That, and I use it as a usb storage device all the time. When next winter rolls around, I will be using the shuffle as my outside player- for when I go snowboarding and whatnot. So I don't have to worry about breaking or freezing anything.

I can get it for $139 with the student discount. Not bad. The whole rechargable battery thing is very appealing. I learned the hard way about devices that eat batteries (anyone wanna buy a digital camera off me?). As I undertand it, you can make playlists in iTunes and then upload it to the shuffle, if you want to control the order. I always set my winamp to play randomly though, so shuffling sounds pretty solid to me.
One thing that's irking me though is it's only $50 more to get the mini. And the mini comes in pink. I love pink. But the mini doesn't have the convenience of being a USB drive, which I really dig. I have a 128mb jump drive and I use it constantly. Having 1gb at my disposal could really come in handy.
Having it charge off my computer... hmm I'm conflicted. It would be a pain to have to leave my lappy on at night just the charge my ipod. And you know they charge an arm and a leg (ok $30, but still) for the wall adapter.

the shuffle charges off usb as well - so i dont' see the arguement.
on disk mode apple has a blurb in a TIL artiicle
"If you are having difficulty putting the iPod mini or iPod (Click Wheel) into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the click wheel and not near the center."
which shows that it will in fact do target disk mode - the mini that is.
Firewire on a mini is an added option - for the cable.
i seriously can't understand anyone getting a shuffle instead of a mini.(edit - unless they own a full size)
If the 3 oz bothers you during the workout - you probly need to focus on the workout more than the music
that said.. i'd get the mini, OBVIOUSLY.

Hey,
Got a question 'bout the shuffle...
In the picture it has the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons, I assume that when you select to "play in order" (Not sure the exact mode name), you can skip songs like on a CD player? Or when you play in order, does it just mean it does just that, and you have no control over the songs? I know you can select songs and all, but I mean control as in, can I skip stuff when I don't want to hear it when I'm out 'n about. =P
Thanks!

oh yeah.....it just means you can pick your own songs in the order you want to hear them. instead of getting them randomly picked by itunes. if you hold down the right arrow it will skip seconds and it you just press it once it goes to the next song. just like a cd player. also there's a bunch of tricks i've seen on sites, where like if you hit the play/pause button 3 times it locks the shuffle so in case you bump it it won't change songs. it's really a great mp3 player, just alot of people don't know much about all the features.

ah - my point was the mini and shuffle charge off usb.. either way you're using a computer to do it.. with the mini you can buy an adaptor. So i don't see there is much difference charging them.

the point is, is do you need to. I find that I very rarely look at the screen on my Creative MP3 player, normally using the controls to skip songs I don't like. The only time when I do use the screen is in album selection, but I would imagine that there is functionality to skip albums as well.

I have a full size iPod and the Shuffle...
The shuffle is great as a work-out player. If you work-out/run for one hour a day, you'll get almost 2 weeks before you need to charge it... that's pretty awesome. Also... it is as simple as can be to drag the songs you want onto the shuffle. If you are worried about switching songs and skipping stuff, you are not using the shuffle for what it was made for.
If you want a full functioning mp3 player with a screen and much more storage space, then OF COURSE you do not get the shuffle.
