Clean install of XP pro.

Thread Starter
I will be doing a clean install of XP Pro on my 8600. I have the XP Pro CD and the Dell Drivers and Utilities CD that came with my computer. Is there any thing else I'll need for my 8600? This will be my first clean install on the 8600, but I have done a clean install on other laptops and desktops. Just wanted to find out if there are any drivers or things that Dell did not include with my CD's.

Thanks
John

you should be ok. This isn't your first time and since Dell sent you a Dell drivers and utilities CD, everything should be with you. If your missing some drivers, you can always check at Dell's website.

Thanks. I'll be busy today with the reinstall. I always hate the clean installs because it takes up so much time to get all the software reinstalled.

Make sure you wipe your hard drive clean or it'll be a mess!

That is what I was planning to do. A few years back when I was upgrading from one OS to the next OS, I had to contact MS about some issue and the tech recomended that even when upgrading to do a clean install. Most techs that I have come in contact with, say that it is good to do a clean install about once a year to keep your computer free of junk and running smooth.

once a year? I do mine every 3 months. There are just some stuff that you can never delete/get too and my PCs seems to be faster this way(altough the whole procedure takes a long time to complete)

Every 3 months would keep your computer clean, but that is a little to much work for me. Once a year or as need for me seems to work just fine. Thanks for the help.

Same here pal, I do it about every 4 months or so and all my data is stored externally, so wiping hard drive is no problem. All the junk that computers accumulate, it's easier to reinstall.

Agreed. I have to install Pro/E, which legally is only available through the university for free. It's a headache to reformat any other time because I can't get a copy of Pro/E.

As far as drivers are concerned, I would download the modem drivers from the Dell website before you do the clean install. They were not included in my CD. Just as a precaution.

Wow, 3 months sounds cool. What do you do to save time? Did you make an image of the system with the important soft you need? Any tips on this?

Mine were not included with my CD either. Luckly the 8600 is not my only computer, so I was able to down load the correct drivers. I have got it back up and running with most programs reinstalled.

How do you do a "clean" install. When I do an re-install, I pop in the cd and reformat. How do I do the "clean" method?

Also - How do you get around the cd key issue with Microsoft Office (if you use it). Mine does not allow me to reinstall it anymore unless I call Microsoft and say, "relax buddy, I'm just reinstalling it again not stealing it." :P

Making a image using something like Ghost is like one of the easiest methods so that you don't have to re-install all your stuff, etc.

Could someone confirm that restamping with Ghost will get around having to call in to Microsoft for the activation?
