Windows XP 64 Trade-in Offer

From CNET News.com

"...The new Windows won't be showing up on retail shelves, though. Customers who buy a desktop or server with a 64-bit chip will have the option of getting the new operating system, while people who own an existing 64-bit machine will have the option of trading in their old 32-bit Windows for the 64-bit upgrade..."

Anyone have any info on this?

It's been confirmed a few times, but the confusion seems to be in versions. Some sites report XP Pro only will be exchanged, some sites report Pro or Home will be exchanged. Some sites say OEM upgrades must go through a participating OEM. We should know from MS for sure soon enough.

We must be reading two different things:

WIN 64 is available today.

If you signed up and have the beta, can you get the new version for free?

That is because it is Windows XP Profiessional x64 ... it has all the extra features in XP pro. They don't have a home version of x64.

I'm not signing up because it would require me to give up my copy of XP32 and frankly, I'm not ready to do that quite yet... I'd do it if they allowed both versions on the same machine, but I won't give it up.

Just my $.02

I'm thinking I'm just going to buy a copy of XP Pro from the college I work at for 25CND and then do the upgrade with it and pay the 22USD for shipping on XP Pro 64bit. In the end I spend 50bucks for something that'd normally cost 300CND (250CND XP Pro from Store, 22USD for upgrade [Like 50CND]).

I had the same thought, use one of my academic licenses, but I assume they prohibit that. If it works, I'll have to go ahead and buy one.

Ok this sucks!!

I could only get Windows XP Home Edition when I bought my laptop and this DOESN'T qualify for the trade-in according to MS's website!!!

Yes, I know there are big differences between Home and Pro, but doesn't this feel like some type of bait and switch?

Being able to get a copy of WinXP 64 was one of the big sales points for me in getting an AMD Athlon 64 processor based laptop, next to the outstanding 32-bit performance of course.

Buy now and get the 64-bit WinXP OS when it ships everyone said…guess not. And of course, you can't buy a copy at retail. I'm not inclined to go out and buy a copy of WinXP 32 just to get the upgrade, even assuming MS doesn't have a master list of qualifing product codes it checks against.

Has anyone spoken to eMachines about them participating in MS's OEM trade-in program and/or offering us Home Edition licensees some sort of upgrade path???

So uh, I figured I'd give it a shot. Went and paid my 25CND for a copy of XP Pro through my college. Got it, installed it, got the PID from it and filled out the XP64Bit Order form. It accepted it....

My order is currently pending. I'll let you know if the status changes to "Shipping in progess" or "Denied, nice try sucker".

Just got off the phone with eMachines tech support. As of now they have no plans to offer any kind of Win XP 64 trade in offer whatsoever. The main reason I was given (and man what a lame reason it was) was that the backup disks would no longer be functional and that eMachines is commited to supporting there computers "As Sold".

I think everyone needs to call 1-801-401-1419 (eMachines tech support) and voice your opinions. Maybe if enough people call, they will change there policy.

I got my friend's COA and it accepted it =D. Dunno what it's going to do to his computer though..

I personally don't see it as a bait and switch. No where did I read advertised, nor did I assume I was going to get a free upgrade when x64 came out. MS has no obligation to even upgrade the pro liscense.

As far as being able to get a copy being a sales point, nothing has changed there. You should still be able to get an OEM copy. I don't know who "everyone" is, but you should have got it in writing if a salesman told you that.

Well.... not to stir the pot here or anything, because I agree with Thunder's stance... but right on Gateway's home page it flat out says they recommend WinXP Pro... leads me just a hair to wonder why it wasn't an option on the 74xx series...

Basically his version of WinXP is no longer valid. Or yours is invalid?

It will still work just legally you can't use it anymore and your key MIGHT be removed from the Windows Update Site not allowing you to get anymore Windows Updates.
