that statement is a legal licence requirement for any OEM that sells machines with XP Home preinstalled

I am a student at the University of South Florida and I called them up and they offer XP Pro for $70 student price. This sounds like a decent deal. Is it worth it to buy and then upgrade to X64 edition? How can I found out if all my programs will still work with it?

To find out if your programs still work with it just go to www.microsoft.com/windows/ and click on 'Windows 64bit Edition'. They offer a free 60 day trial of XP Pro 64bit. Install it and test.

Edit: Has anyone who has placed their order had the status change from 'Pending' to anything else? I lost my tracking ID so I can't check mine.

I ordered the trial version, just to give it a try. I'm not planning on spending money to upgrade to XP pro to get pro 64 (I might be convinced to spend $80 or so). My question is, will there be away to upgrade to the full version of pro 64 at the end of the trial?
Yes, you can go buy the full thing and then just change the CDKey on your current install (the trial) and then re-activate and it will get rid of the trial without needing another format/reinstall.

So there's no way to get around buying the upgrade to XP pro then. Bummer.

So if I were to download the trial version of x64 I could install everything and if I'm happy with it, I can buy XP Pro (32-bit version) and then order the upgrade to x64 (full version) and use the CD key from that?....and not have to reinstall everything?

Yup, or instead of buying XP Pro and doing the upgrade to 64 Pro you could just buy 64 Pro if it ever goes retail. Right now its only trade ups and OEMs... and *cough* well you know what I mean.

My order still says pending....

Maybe they're waiting for today's launch/webcast to start processing orders?

Did anyone get a confirmation e-mail?

I don't know about anyone else, but I feel really cheated here. Most PCs made by any company come shipped standard with XP Home with no option of upgrading to XP Professional. All of the M68xx and 74xxGx lines are the same way. It just looks like Microsoft is making one more hoop that AMD users have to jump through to make their systems "bigger and badder" than the Intel users in the world. Afterall, they can't leave their bread and butter in the dust. What would people say?

It's up to the OEM to decide which version of Windows to provide, not Microsoft. XP Pro costs ~$100 more than XP Home. Is Microsoft supposed to give us all $100 free because E-machines/Gateway didn't give us an option? I'm not thrilled about it either, but place blame where blame is due. Love them or hate them, Microsoft is a business, and they are not in business to give away money. If anything, E-machines/Gateway should be offering some sort of trade-up program since they never even gave us a choice. The other OEMs I'm accustomed to dealing with have an option at purchase time, and it's the cheap nature of people that land them the Home edition.

I have a question. MS says you must have a WinXP installed by an OEM that comes with a new computer. What if you bought a copy of WinXP Pro off a store shelf?

PID should be on the sticker with the product key on it. The authenticity sticker.

Install it, right click on My Computer and hit Properties.

I don't think this will work. The keys for OEM and the keys for retail are not interchangeable, just try putting an OEM key into the blanks during install of a retail copy or vice versa, and you'll find out. The way I read the agreement for the trade-up program is that they are only going to accept OEM keys. One thing is for certain, you can try and the worst they can do is say no. I have an unactivated OEM copy at my disposal that I'm going to try to use.

I'm calling BS on that 'review' - I upgraded to X64, and every game I've installed on it so far - Doom 3, HL2, WoW, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Madden 2005 - all ran noticeably faster.
