There's at least one more build that will be coming.. I want to get the Northbridge temp on the graph as well work more on controlling the fans by the gpu temp, still need to figure out how I want that to work, maybe something as simple as a check on gpu temp, if it exceeds a certain value, kick the fan on high reguardless of other settings (this would have an option to enable/disable it). I'll fix the little things as well (like the temp label), and see if i can get the color's to be a user selectable option.

If you wanna keep me in stock on coffee/red bull/food stuffs with donations, feel free to .. Totally optional, but certainly appreciated.

hi all,

I also modified the i8fangui program for XPS2.
here are my modifications:
GPU temp corretly shown (just check it with core temp shown within ForceWare driver)
GPU / DIMM temps are not swapped
fan RPMs shown correctly
CPU and GPU fans separatly controlled based on their temps, see Options/Temperature control
CPU (left) fan also kicks in if GPU temp exceeds specified temps (fan level 3, 4)!!!
temp history graph changed: doubled in height, DIMM, other and HDD temps can also be shown (see Optioms/display)
value changes will be displayed immediately.

get it from here

installation:
istall the original 2.2 i8kfangui program
after that you can use my modified exe instead of i8kfangui.exe.
if you use autostart please go into Options (check the autostart checkbox) and close the dialog with OK!
modified temperature profile data must be reentered...

enjoy
comments are welcome

Kispiteye,

Can you create a fangui program for the Gateway m680 ?
sorry, I just have an XPS2, there is no way I can test it on other laptops.
but YOU could try my mod anyway, maybe it will work...

the smbios commands that are sent by the app will not work on non-dell laptops.
I.E. fangui will not control non-dell fans.

Howcome when I choose a different profile, nothing happens?

The default for all profiles is the same temp ranges and fan speeds. You will want to go into the options and select the profile and any fan speed/temp changes that you would like.

If we can come up with a list of common temps/speeds, i'll make those the defaults.

Well what are some safe/efficient ranges?

Great job with the mod btw, Spuds.

Here's what I'm using for the defaults.. I think it's always better to turn the fans on at lower temps by default..

default temp monitor settings:
turnOn1 = 30, turnOff1 = 20, Fan 1: Slow -- Fan 2: Slow
turnOn2 = 40, turnOff2 = 30, Fan 1: Slow -- Fan 2: Fast
turnOn3 = 55, turnOff3 = 40, Fan 1: Fast -- Fan 2: Fast
turnOn4 = 65, turnOff4 = 55, Fan 1: Fast -- Fan 2: Fast

There's 4 built in profiles.. normal, games, office, meeting

-- New build 2.2.1.03 is in work
- Added NorthBridge Temp to graph
- Fixed text alignment
- Changed case of status history text labels
- Turned Draw Cpu Speed History to OFF by default, it will read it and display it, but not graph it, you can turn it on in options.
More features to come (GPU temp based control is on the list), keep the ideas coming in folks

Ok all, need some input for CPU/GPU based fan controls..

So there's abit of a difference in the XPS2 and the 9300 in how the fans work to cool the system.

The XPS2 uses both fans to cool the GPU, there's 2 heat pipes that are attached to the GPU and those go to copper blocks that sit behind the fans.

The 9300 only uses one heat pipe and aluminum block for the GPU, so only the second fan will cool the GPU on the 9300.

My question is which do you think would be better.. 2 independant controls that allow one fan to be controlled by the cpu temp and the other by the gpu temp? which really means the gpu on the xps2 should control both fans.. or 2 sets of temps that the app checks and sets the fan speed based on EITHER cpu or GPU temp?

Here's what I have in mind.

Spuds - fyi, just threw a couple bucks in your direction to the email provided.... not a lot, just a little to say thanks and buy you the redbull!

Good job modding this thing Spud! I would suggest just making a switch so people can choose the "XPS2" or "i9300" settings (for fan speed control).

If you can get the fans to be controlled by both the CPU and GPU, that would be awesome! I did want to add one more idea. I noticed that the fans have more than just three speed levels (off, low, high), they have more like 2 or 3 sub-settings for each level (very low, low, medium; sorta high, high, very high).

If you can incorporate that, and even better, if these fans are controlled via PWM, it might be possible to control EXACT RPMs. If you can tap into the controller for the fans, that would be fantastic!

I've posted the link to the beta version of 2.2.1.03 in the first post. This contains the fan control by cpu or gpu for fan 2 and some other items.

Hi,

First of all, thanks for the good job of modding this program. Btw, is anyone interested in making it a Windows service? If there's a demand for it, I can do an initial implementation (but I will probably not be able to support it in the future, since I will part with my i9300 in a month or so)

Now to the bugs:

1. Temperature control values for Fan 1 are not properly saved/restored across program runs. Fan 2 settings seem to be ok.
2. Legend strings right to the CPU/Temp graph don't fit the window (More precisely, "Northbridge temperature" doesn't fit)
3. "Cancel" button in Options is misaligned and is all-uppercase. Not really an issue but should be trivial to fix.

Otherwise, very cool. At last a version that can properly silent this laptop

I'll double check the saves, got a specific example?

Yup, If your running 120 DPI it'll fit correctly, 96 DPI smashes things together, the final build will be something inbetween.

aye, that's true.. will get that one changed up.

I should note that if your using Fan 2 controls via CPU temp, it's using the Fan 1 temp settings and the speed that you selected for fan 2 at that profile. I'll modify the gui so this makes more sense by dimming out fan2 temps when control by cpu is selected.

That's what I'm trying to achieve:

That's what I have in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\CD\I9KFAN,MonSet1 after I press OK:
PHP Code:
55 45 60 55 78 60 85 78 40 30 50 40 67 50 77 67 2 2 3 3 3 3 3 3 30 30 40 40 50 50 60 60
It seems that settings are saved properly (at least, numbers are similar to what I entered in the GUI). But when the program loads next time, all temperature ranges for Fan1 are set to their defaults. Fan2 is not affected.

Mine i9300 is 1440x900

Thank you for your efforts,
Anton

1. Temperature control values - Fixed
2. Legend strings - adjusted
3. "Cancel" button in Options is misaligned - Changed

Also changed around the GUI for the temp controls to make more sense, new beta 2.2.1.03a is up, you'll find the link on the first post in this thread.

Thanks!

Now it works great.

Im a little confused and perhpas I am getting this wrong. Fan1 cools the cpu only on the i9300 and cools the cpu and helps cool the gpu on the xps2. Fan2 cools the gpu only on both i9300 and xps2. So why is there an option for fan2 to be controlled by cpu or gpu... when it doesnt cool the cpu? Am I mixed up or missing something? Any help would be nice, sorry!
