Balancing Price, Weight and Performance.

Hi, insert requisite first post stuff here.

I'm a graduating college student who needs to replace his laptop for the first time in five years . So, I'm a little out of the loop. I've been browsing the forums a lot, but still need some personalized advice.

I'm looking for something 5 lbs or lower, priced at around $1300 or lower (preferably), with decent hardware specs and a 2 year warranty at least. Windows machine please!

So far, the contenders seem to be the Dell 700M and the Asus M5N. Anything else I should be taking a look at? Thanks!

$1300, avg hardware, below 5lbs is hard
depends wut decent hardware means i guess
dell 700m with discounts are always cheap..
do u play games? what are you doing with it?
wuts most important? beauty of the screen? graphices? battery-life? looks?
if u r just using office applications, burning dvd's, movies.. its a lot easier than if u play games

Go a little higher in price and get a good VISA or student discount on the IBM T42.

Well, you could look at the Asus M3NP which you can buy configured from many places, including Agear Notebooks. Dependent on the memory, the hard drive size and speed, and processor, you could get it very close to $1300, but not with a 2yr warranty and a little over 5lbs.

Or you could look at the Fujitsu S6231 which is also highly rated on the forums, on New Egg for right about $1300 and wighs in at 4lbs, but also without the 2yr warranty. You could get it at Portale One for just under $1500 with a 3yr warranty.

Just a couple suggestions..

Thanks for all the advice!

I found a site through the forums, Geared2Play, that offers the Asus m5n for a little under $1500 with warranty and a nice 60 GB HD with 7200 RPM. It certainly costs more than the Dell 700m, but from what I've heard, the build quality more than makes up for the price difference.

I think IBM and some other companies mentioned are wonderful, but a little out of my range with the hardware I want. Seems like Asus is the way to go, hmm.

I have the S5N - which is a lighter version of the M5N w/ no optical drive built in and I can tell you it is stellar. I've heard the M5N has some issues with the fan being louder than normal - though I'm not sure its enough to keep you away from such a good notebook.

Hmm, interesting. Where can I find the S5N? I haven't had any luck finding it on ProPortable, Geared2Play or ISTNC.
