Strange noise on headphones

Thread Starter
If I use my headphones on my new 8890, I hear a 'beep beep beep' (faintly) periodically (like every 10 seconds or so).

It is very annoying. It doesn't seem to correspond with fans kicking in or any other hardware/software running.

When listening to dvd's or mp'3, its very distracting.

Its very regular so it doesn't appear to be connection related.

Anyone else experience this?

Everyone with a Sager experiences this

Go to the Audio Control panel and disable everything you dont need (Especially the Microphone, Phone line, CD Player, LIne in etc.)

I personally only keep the Master Volume and the Wave options unmuted..everything else DIES!!!

You wont have the problem once you do this...

gs is right... seems to be a problem.

Check out this thread on a work-around one user found.

The distortion on laptops from the sound outputs is very common and simply just a poor shielding job. But when it comes to laptops, adding the right gauge wiring /w shielding can be difficult.

With a system this highend though, it is unexcusable!

The USB speakers and headphones are their own soundcard basically and would perform really well because the signal is digital until it hits the DAC. A digital signal is unaffected by the interference of the mobo and other parts.

The S/PDIF port would be unaffected unless the signal goes to analog and back to digital inside the unit.

Yes, there is a faint beeping tone when I'm using the laptop sound. However, it's only annoying with headphones, the beeping is inaudible with normal speakers.

Is there any way to be able to put some more sheilding on these wires by taking apart the laptop? I dunno, wrap some of them in aluminum foil, careful not to touch any exposed contacts. If that gets rid of the noise, that would be really cool

I shouldn't have to hack my new $2000 machine to fix this problem.

Anyone at PC Torque hear about this (no pun intended).

To me, my audio is unusable with headphones as its very annoying and very noticable. This is not acceptable.

What can Sager to to help us with this?

Actually, that noise is MUCH worse on just about any other laptop I've ever used. There was one IBM Thinkpad that had that same pattern of beeps, only it was audible regardless of whether you used headphones or not. I've tried some display HP's and toshibas, and they all have some sort of interference.

Thankfully on my Thinkpad 600x I have no distortion that I know of, nor does the output on my desktop. (Actually I am surprised by the quality of the cheapo Asrock mobo I am using but that is another thread).

I too have heard the same click on my 8890 when using headphones.

I must say compared to my old Toshiba 2710, my 8890 is a disappointment wrt to its audio.

Differences so far:
1. the volume out of the 8890 headphone output is lower than the Toshiba.
2. The annoying clicks which are caused by interference I think.
3. Very poor sound quality from the 8890 speakers compared to the Toshiba.

This is not to say the 8890 is bad for a laptop rather the Toshiba has excellent sound output. Much louder and much better frequency response overally. After comparing a Sony Viao to the Toshiba, the Viao sounded crappy too - more like the 8890.

What I want to hear is the output going to S/PDIF speakers.
Anyone already done this?

edit: James, I have never had any interference at all on my Toshiba. Which model Toshiba's have you found with a problem?

I have muted everything and still I get the 'beep beep beep' in my headphones.

This is awful.

I am dissspointed there has been no response from PC Torque on this issue.

Is there another thread I should be following?

I use my notebook exclusively with the headphones and the beeping is driving me nuts.

Just got rid of the clicks.
I reverted to a previous system checkpoint.
These drivers are sending me nuts.
I also have done some tweaking with the AC-97 sound manager and I have to say whilst the sound is still not as good as my old Toshiba, it now sounds really good. Amazing what a bit of fiddling with a graphic equaliser will do .

Renoz can you reinstall or revert to a previous version? I don't get any interference at all. Your beep beep beep effect could be drivers not interference. Sorry I can't be more specific as I have only just learnt a bit more about these 8890's.

It would seem that there is a hell of a lot of stuff (technical term - used in all the books) that is interacting in these systems. This is more an XP and driver issue rather than the hardware I suspect.

I tested this with a REALLY old Toshiba on display at Costco. I don't remember which model it was, but there was a very distracting buzzing sound. The newer ones, granted, are far better. It'd say that their overall sound quality is better than the sager.

You know what's really funny? I had an accident with my sager yesterday. I stepped on my headphone plug while lifting the sager from a desk. I heard a loud CRACK from the laptop, and I almost fainted clean away. However, after I tried testing it again, the plug jiggled a bit, not too bad, just more play than before, and the freaky thing is, it's LOUD now! The output is REALLY loud for some reason. I don't know WHAT I did, maybe somehow connect more power to it or something, but I'm getting very loud audio now. Looks like it didn't turn out to be too bad a situation after all...

Say what ?

Can you reproduce the headphone manouver so all of us can benefit from your *mistake*. Pictures would help .

Is the quality any better since it got louder?

As to the Toshiba's yes I agree about the low end systems. I was lucky enough to own one of the better Toshiba's for its time. With the Harmon Kardon speakers in it, the Toshiba sounds really good (particularly low freq. response).

Since the tweaking of the AC-97 sound card I am really pleased with the sound now out of the 8890. No clicks or buzzing on either headphones or speakers.
I truthfully don't have a clue what the hell I did. I lifted up the laptop as I stepped on the speaker wire, so the speaker wire pulled down really hard on the port, and somehow, something made a crack and the port wiggles a bit now. However, the volume is a WORLD of difference. Before, I couldn't hear much through the headphones turned all the way up in a noisy place, now I only have to have it halfway up even in a loud noisy environment.

Now everyone, this is a disclaimer: I don't know WHAT I did to my laptop, hopefully it doesn't result in some permanent damage. Don't try this yourselves. But if you do, I'm not responsible!

You could say the quality is better since you don't have to turn up the resulting amplifier as much. However, the beeping is still there. That hasn't seemed to have changed... Oh well, maybe I'll take it apart some day to put some insulation on the leads...

I have the same problem, going to try the new drivers see if that solves the problem. I wish PC Torque would reply, not very good PR

Edit tried the new drivers didn't fix the problem

Well I tried it with the audio DJ and it doesn't happen then. It also sounds alot better when using the audio DJ.

Cruz', could you be more specific as to what you did to fix the problem?

I am having a very slow (and somewhat confusing) email correspondance with Sager on this.

Any detailed information as to a work-around/cure would be greatly appreciated.

What I ment was that if you turn off the Sager and use the CD DJ you will not get the noise, and it will sound better. It still happens if the computer is on. I'm going to remove the drivers and and see what happens. Good luck let me know if you find anything out.

PS: I email PC Torque but still no reply

Edit uninstalled the drivers, still makes the noise, not good

I was getting an annoying "beep, beep, beep" clicking sound as well, but it happened through my speakers and my headphones both.

Then one night I noticed that there was a little red light blinking through the infrared port right next to the sound card and the blinks coincided with the beeps...so I went into device manager and disabled the infrared port and the beeps were no more.

I don't know if this is the same problem you guys are referring to, but this seems to have fixed my audio problems.

Also, this explains why with audio dj the clicking doesn't happen...the infrared port isn't active.
