for Asus: control Winamp with sidebuttons (HControl replacement)

I got bored today.

This (HControl.exe) will let you use the sidebuttons on your Asus laptop with Winamp. Also the wireless buttons (by power button on top and Fn+F2) will not open the Network Connections folder.

Report any bugs.

Enjoy.

Hmm Winamp, i haven't use this in a long long long time. What version does it work with?

Nice job by the way!

Tested with (latest) Winamp 5.08e, but theoretically how Winamp is called using WM_COMMAND hasn't change since 2.x, so feel free to experiment.

I've been made aware on another forum that there may be an incompatibility if you are using a older installed version of the ATK0100 package (which includes HControl). This is based on the latest version so just make sure you have the latest installed before you begin.

This is what I used (released 01/21/05):
http://www.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/M6N/..._2K_050121.zip <-- that is in the M6N (model) directory, I don't think it should matter but if that doesn't work then find the latest update for your model on the Asus website

I just want to say thanks for the work. This is great, it's working flawlessly for me.

Maybe in the future you can make a HControl that allows us to pick the media player with a reg key and allow those keys to control it, some people like to use foosplayer and such...

Great work none the less, the above was just a suggestion for new ideas. I'm very grateful anyone took the time to mod the Hcontrol as it is.

I don't get the part about the Wireless button tho. When I press it, it still turns off my wireless connection, which is what I want it to do. What was the other intent you wanted to acheive?

Just glad someone can get some use out of this.

I assume you mean foobar2000 player? That can be arranged.

The thing with the wireless, for me it doesn't work because I don't wanna use the intel proset garbage. Asus of course didn't make it work with the built-in controls in windows, so when I press that button I get an error. I changed it because the network connections folder is more useful than an error popup. Anyway, it's interesting that it still works for you. I assume you use the proset utility? If you wouldn't terribly mind, could you uninstall the proset utility and see if it then opens the connections folder?

Hmm what was the requirement on installing this. It come with a reg file and the exe. Add the registry and then run the EXE?

Great job. I finally install it, working great!

This already worked in Winamp with the driver revision he talks about. Just enable the 'global hotkey' plugin from within Winamp options and the front/side play/pause/skip/stop-buttons should control it just fine.

Edit: Global hotkey support is implemented in Foobar2K as well and they seem to work fine there to.

Wouldn't mind an easy way to reassign the 'CD on/off key', though. Actually considered trying to attempt a hack for this myself at one point.

You mean to tell me this works flawlessly with foobar2k? And here I was looking for ways to make it work with that...

With the CD on/off, you mean that little switch that can be pulled towards you thats on the bottom side of the laptop by the lower left corner? If yes, I'm way ahead of you.

Why need the on/off. Press the play button and auto open up the winamp ehhehe.

I'd love for there to be an iTunes version

edit: I fooled around with iTunes and it seems as if it doesn't use the standard wparam/lparam to interface with the rest of the system

is it still possible?

Posted an update.

You can now choose what player to open/control with a registry key, choose between Winamp, Foobar2k and WMP. The registry key will be launches blindly, but note HControl can only "control" (using Play, Stop, Next and Prev) the 3 players listed above.

Network Connections folder is now only launches instead of an error message. So if you have Intel Proset installed, nothing should change for you, if you don't you'll now get something more useful than an error message.

CD on/off (available on my M6N, dunno about other Asus models) can now control an application of your choice via the Custom key.

Location of the media key has been moved, so make sure you edit and merge the reg file with this update.

Uuuuhmm, I dunno see site for more.

WM_COMMAND sure would make it easy. Is there *any* way to control iTunes externally? I wouldn't expect it to, Apple takes themselves too seriously it seems, they don't think people would want to build to use anything else to control itunes than itunes itself...

(I don't like Apple)

Yup. Works fine, for me at least, without the plugin you mention. Just configure the hotkeys from within foobar2K.

Right. Thanks. Works perfectly.

Dude you are the man. I configured it to use Media Player Classic.
Your Hcontrol works flawlessly.

Thanks a lot for making me and others feel even better on our purchases.
Good stuff!

Nice Work!!

The pause button seems to restart the track rather than pause the song. Using Winamp 2.80. Regardless, much easier than trying to navigate to Winamp all the time for play controls.

That was "as intended"... till now.

Another update:
Play will now toggle between Play and Pause (Winamp/Foobar) -- as it should.
Stop button now exits the player if the player is already in a 'stopped' state (Winamp/Foobar)
File size increased by 4kb as a result.

[edit] Anyone enjoying what I've done could consider donating.
