Toshiba 1405 backlight/inverter dead?

My mother has a 3 year old Toshiba Satellite 1405 S-171. A little while ago she was using it as usual and the screen became all garbled (similar to overheating video card) so I held down the power button for 5 secs to turn it off. When I tried to power it up again, everything started up as normal except the backlight didn't turn on. I could still see the screen and use the computer, but it's very very dark.

I was kind of expecting this for a while because everytime the computer would 'wake up' after being idle for a while, the screen would start off a dark pink-ish color, then slowly get brighter until it was fully warmed up...I guess?

Here's what I have tried so far:

-Looked for an external lcd switch (used to turn lcd on/off when lid is opened or closed. Didn't find any
-Hooked up to an external monitor and tried manually changing between displays. If I change to the laptop monitor, the backlight will flicker on for a split second, then turn back off.

I believe the problem lies with either the backlight or the inverter. Any ideas which one is dead?

I have found them both on ebay. The inverter is $10, while the backlight and lcd panel is around $150-200.

I hope it's just the inverter...

24 hour bump***

A little more info I have obtained since yesterday. I can reproduce the original problem for a split second by switching between an external and the laptop lcd. I also hear a medium-high pitched whine, sort of like a tv set when not warmed up. Would that sound be synonymous with an inverter?
