Anti-Virus Suggestion

Thread Starter
So I'm setting up my new laptop. What do y'all suggest I use for anti-virus protection? Any thoughts on Avast! or AVG? And MSFT is bugging me to install SP2. I had some issues with my wireless card in my desktop not working after installing it. Should I forego it this time? Anything I'm losing out on, besides the the built in firewall? Thanks.

I use Avast... it's great.
I'd suggest using Avast or AVG... both are great, free AV programs

I would recommend Bitdefender, Kasperky antivirus or AVG. I found all of them great. Now i'm using both Kapersky (bought) and AVG (free).
I daily receive various viruses from mails and both detect them. AVG is free but i find Kaspersky is more often able to really clean a file rather than putting it in quarantine.

It has been confirmed that Avast sometime falsely detect certain drivers (video) as a trojan virus.

NAV and SAV blow chunks, they cant detect worth crap and they hog all your resouces, NOD32 is the way to go, never had an infection with it,

Well Folks,
I came accross this Cnet review recently on PC-cillin. I used it years ago [when it was free]. Never got nailed.
It''s well rated and uses VERY low system resources.
AND........the price is RIGHT ! $10 bucks after the rebate [assuming you have some competing AV or box or manual for one] ......Even at the $35, it looks real competitive.Try the Review Here:

Does anyone else have bad experiences with Norton Antivirus???

I've been using it all my life... never thought about changing it... probably because I had nothing to compare to.

What do you guys think? Should I find another AV program?

in my life i used Norton, NOD32 and AVG. (in that order). and these are my 2 cents:

norton blows big time! stay away....EVIL!

NOD32...amazing little tool

AVG. ... very good but slows down boot-up time

Free ... Avast!. AVG does not properly detect some trojans, and gives false positives on others.
I currently use the avast! free version. I have had no issues and no false positives **knock on wood** yet.

I was using Norton, which isn't very good and then upgraded to McAfee through work. The only downside to McAfee is the manual update process.

I want to check out the free AVG version. I'm looking for something that isn't to resource heavy, so AVG may be out of the question.

What other free av aoftware clients are people using, besides what has been mentioned so far?

Also using Avast! here. It's heads and tails better than AVG, IMHO

If it works for you, then no point in changing it. I changed because I noticed my older desktop was starting to stutter a little. I ran Konfabulator and used a little CPU tracking widget, and with Norton active, my cpu activity was around 40%. Without Norton active, my cpu activity was less than 5%. I would also see graphics programs stutter and such. I'm using Avast on my desktop now, and AVG on my laptop. Can't decide which I like better, but my desktop no longer stutters.

GNU/Linux. No anti-virus needed.

On my mother-in-law's computer, I put AVG on it, and it works fine. My father has a copy of Norton Corporate that his work gives to all employees for their home boxes, and he never complains.
