Well im about to buy a system, i should have enough money within a week.

I have a couple of questions, i was going to buy a 3.4 ghz system with 4x 512 ram.

But in accordance with sods law they have removed the 4x512 option and left only the 2x 1024 option which is a damn sight dearer

My only options (on a student budget) are either to go with 1 gig ram and a 3.6 ghz processor or 2 gigs ram with a 3.2 processor

what preference would you chose, my intentions are to use it for video editing and gaming, however nothing more than UT 2004 and the new gta game coming out.

always...always go RAM mate!!! Always...

Depends on what you are going to use it for. For most applications 1gb is enough and you woul dbenifit with faster proc. for games. On the other hand if you are doing a lot of intensive application stuff (3d, PS etc) then ram woudl benifit you more.

No brainer here, Get the fastest processor you can afford (Presumably the 3.6Ghz) and the 1 gig of ram. You can always upgrade the RAM later on and 1 gig is plenty believe me. Unless your doing intense scientific or vector graphic type work, you don't need the 2 gigs. Really, its overkill, most people forget that most production servers with resource intensive operating systems don't even use that much memory...Get the quick processor and the 1 gig, its plenty.

PS, I only got 2 gigs of RAM because if I ever resell the lappy one day its gonna be easier to sell all maxed out. Even I know I don't really need it...

thanx for the advice i think i shall take it , i was considering upgrading once the warranty runs out.

3.6 with 1 gb ram it is

Go with the processor. No need to pay AW inflated prices on memory.
Yup, you can add to the memory later...

Xir, look at my specs, it's exactly what I bought, and it's eating Half Life 2 for breakfast. I got an "unreal" benchmark score for Unreal Tourney 2004, running at 180 FPS in one test, and 76 FPS in the game test. You will not be disappointed.

but he said he's using it for video editting. wouldn't more memory benefit that instead of having a faster cpu? besides aw STILL doesn't offer the 6xx series p4 64bit cpus yet. wouldn't one of those be a better choice if you wanted to "future proof" your laptop as much as possible? besides ut2k4 and gta don't seem to be very cpu intensive titles and can easily be handled by a 3.2 ghz cpu.

I know you may not want to hear this, but many many people on here will tell you to up grade the screen to the 1680x1050 display. It can't be done without lots of work and money once you receive the computer, so I would highly recommend it now. I was skeptical about it too, but the screen really is gorgeous. Plus, if you are doing video editing, the screen is capable of displaying hi-def stuff pretty well once it's available.

im mostly doing video format conversions vob to avi, avi to vob. I also back up dvds for myself and friends.

The problem is i cant afford the screen, its costs about £226, i wish i could afford it, id love to have the built in cam.

But to be honist im running a lower resolution than that at the moment and i dont really need anything higher, so my logic is get what you will use.

still thanx for the advice

just a quickly how long does it normally take for phase one to become phase two once you have confirmed?

The funny thing is about me buying this system is that i once swore never to buy AW due to the prices and their bloated perfomance claims. However when looking at there only 9860 competitor here in the uk they seem like a bargain, strange how things go..

Bloody bank charged me £27 to send the money to alienware. That's about $54 to you yanks. I wish they accepted debit cards or personal cheques then i wouldn't have had to pay extortionate charges.

Im still waiting for phase two even though i confirmed with them on Thursday (i think). My money should be through about Wednesday (damn bank holiday weekend)

I have to say i was very impressed by the representative i spoke to, the Irish accent was a little hard to understand, but she sorted out my gripe with there on-line chat service.

Does phase two normally take long to go through? (someone throw me a bone)

Took me 2 or 3 days to make it from phase 2 to phase 3...using an american based credit card. I don't know how long yours will take, as I understand you wired the money (I think).

What i meant though was the phase 1 to phase 2 time once u have confirmed on the phone?

good luck man, I know the phases seem like they take forever, but when they are over you will be over gratified by the piece de resistance.
