My thanks and a newbie question =)

Thread Starter
First of all I would like to say all my co-workers were geeked when they saw this monster of a computer in my hands. I'm going to recommened this computer to anyone who is thinking about getting one. Customer service is superb. PC Torque was there every step in my order and I like that. not only that but the backpack is way cool but I kind of wish I gotten a custom color though...oh well I just want to say this is a kick ass computer and a warning that I'm probably going to ask a lot of questions for things I don't know and can't find....but don't worry consulting this forum will be my last resort.

But I don't think anyone would mind a simple question. I know it's been asked before but I wanted it to be more specific for me. I'm the kind of person who would leave a computer on for WEEKS only to restart (not shutdown) to leave on for another couple of weeks. Now since this is a laptop is this a healthy thing to do? Should I give it a rest every couple of days? I heard that you can wear out a computer more if you keep on shutting down and repowering the computer so I just want to know if it's true and what would anyone recommended for a computer user like me? Thanks in advance!

I've ran the demo models for 24/7 with the CPU running 100% crunching for cancer for pretty much months straight and no problems. I know there's a few here that run them non stop and I haven't heard of any problems that look like they would have anything to do with the running of it. In theory, if you don't have it turn off the hard disks, it could shorten the life of the hard drive(s).

then again, the "jerk" of the heads when disks begin to spin is the harshest part of a hard-disk cycle, which leads me to believe that its a nice little balance.....

i personally leave my laptop on until I know i won't be on it for hours (usually bed or weekends).....as for my desktops, they stay on 24-7 (minus reboot) with the disks spinning down after an hour w/o use.

One thing to keep in mind is you would have a tendancy to ignore the batteries if you left it on all the time in AC power, so to keep them in good condition you would need to unplug and run it down. I know my parents didn't know this and now they have several laptops with worthless batteries cause they never paid them any mind. Otherwise, I think it could handle it. i know at least 1 person who has some bum software that needs to reinstall if they turn the computer off, so they just keep it on all the time, no problems for at least the last year.

You shouldn't experience any problems with a laptop by leaving it on that you wouldn't experience with a desktop. A few things to consider... the LCD screen is fragile. It's best if you set it to turn off after about 10 minutes of no use if you plan to leave the laptop on. That way, it will save the life of the screen. As mentioned, the hard drives don't like to be constantly spinning. You may consider setting them to spin down after a few hours of non-use so overnight they won't be on constantly. I leave laptops up as servers for games for days at a time with no problems, both this sager and other laptops.

By the way... do not hesitate to ask any questions you have on these forums :-) Don't make them your last resort unless that's just your preference, lol, because they're here for you to use. This place rules :-) Welcome and best of luck!
