Need advice on a business notebook

Thread Starter
I start a new job next week in network systems at a major corporation and need a notebook with that focus in mind. I've looked a IBM's new T43 and the T42 and like them both. I would like advice on a configuration and whether or not to go with the T43 Sonoma or T42? Is there another vender I should look at other than IBM? I have approx $2500 budget for notebook. Thanx!

Asus W3V, thin, light, sleek design, and portable.

Or

Asus V6V...both is much better than T43 and cheaper.

With IBM you get rock solid reliability. With ASUS you get basically the same, but from a younger company (well ASUS has been around decades, but not as a notebook manufacturer, most mobos and stuff). The advantage of the IBM is in the name really - you know its not going to fail. But based on my own and other users' experience with ASUS ensemble notebooks, neither is the ASUS.

I'd say decide on the intangibles like looks and personal preference.

If you are looking for some alternatives to the thinkpads, the hp nc8230 and nw8240 are worth considering. Both have a three year warranty, and in addition the nw offers on site....

Go with the NW8240. That looks like a killer workstation (playstation )

I really must disagree...the IBM T-43p just has way too much going for it with the IBM name.

Sure, the Asus models are very solid, and will be even bigger in the coming years, but for now, IBM is the standard business notebook for an ensemble of reasons. Reliability, consistency, and just plain excellence in performance. These are the "no-nonsense" straight business notebooks, as in, they're designed and made for business. The Asus notebooks are made to look good, as well as to function well. However, the IBM's don't care a sh*t about how their notebooks look, as long as they function perfectly, and so far, they have, for the most part, functioned pretty darn close to perfectly.

So basically, IBM works great, so does ASUS, but ASUS has the looks too... hmm...

Didn't I see in another thread that you sell Asus notebooks? Seems like people might want to know that if you are going to keep steering them toward the Asus brand.

Another shameless plug

ASUS V6V *drool*

If the Thinkpad wears a business suit, the V6 wears a tux.

[however, you can't beat IBM service...]

It sounds like I'm looking at making the same decision you are. I haven't found any comparative reviews of the T42 and T43, but I have heard that some recommend the T42 instead. I just looked at configuration options on IBM.com, and it looks like I'll probably go with the T42 because I can't get a 14" SVGA screen on the T43.
