Random Shutdowns

Thread Starter
My girlfriend's comptuer recently started randomly shutting down. It is an HP and about 2 years old.

The random shutdowns consist of the CPU just shutting off. To get the computer to start again she has to uplug the power cord for a few seconds, and then plug it back up.

Anyone heard of these random shutdowns, or have a suggestion on how I might fix it?

might try some canned air and blast the fans out.....put a toothpick throught the grate to keep the fans from spinning. if you are not under warrenty, or brave you might try taking some panels off and look for lint or dust build up......search for the model on this forum and maybe someone has a detailed walk through.

Might want to run memtest86 on your ram

Definately sounds like a power supply problem. Might need replacement

Same thoughts than CrabbyPatty. When you have to move or plug/unplug the power cord, you can suspect your supply. Didn't you or her happen to move accidentaly the powercord while the unit was turned on recently ? In my experience this kind of thing is very prone to cause supply breakdown (2 times for me and brothers).

You should be cautious because if it's supply problem, it might "explode" (big "BANG" with a cloud of smoke behind the CU. The time it happened to me I was lucky that no parts of the computer was damaged)

I had a similar problem which when I built my last rig, and it went away after I RMA'ed my Motherboard.

Good luck...

run through everything, if nothing works....throw the computer on the ground and beat it furiously with a stick and that doesn't make it work, then buy a new one...or build one...Hp's suck...soryy

Also, a quick try is to see if you can run scandisk/defrag... or antispyware (that is if you can stay logged in long enough). It could be some software code that went bad.

But definatly sounds like a power issue to me. Try the cord thing, if its still under warrenty see if HP can replace your powerbox.
