Intel 2200BG - Page 2

Well...I had dropout last night and this time my roommate was home and I had him try to get online with his PDA...and he couldn't. I couldn't see any wireless networks available.
So...that leads me to believe it's something with the router or DSL modem....correct?
I'm currently searching throught the linksys Knowledge Base to see if I can find anything that will help...
So far...I'm looking at this:
Linksys

or maybe this?

Lowering Advanced Settings

Will that make any difference?

Or this?
Static IP

and here's some general help for anybody:
Wireless Signal Degradation
Ugh..this is freakin' frustrating!!!! any help...mucho appreciated!

Dajoleo,

From your post, i assumed that you are using a Linksys router? If so, whats the model #? And how long have you been using that prior to your new laptop?

Have you try a new firmware for your linksys router yet? For me that solved my dropout problem.

I'm using the WRT54G. I've had the 'puter and router for almost 2 months and started having problems around 3 weeks ago. I updated to the lastest firmware a few days ago and it still happening.
I've only used the router with the 9300

In my own experience, that Linksys router is THE worst router available.. I pawned mine off to someone else and purchased a Netgear 624 and the difference is night and day. No more intermittent signal drops and much smoother performance.
The 2200 works well, but I have found the 2915 to be a step up in speed.

Okay I completed the mandatory reformat last evening. I used the above mentioned intel drivers for the card. It seems to hold up pretty well using WEP. It takes a little long to affiliate with the router, much longer than the broadcom unit in our HP notebook. It simple refuses to maintain a connection in WPA mode. WEP is not an acceptable form of security for us so as far as I am concerned the card is defective. I've been doing a lot of reading on the Dell forums and MANY people are having the same issue.

Instead of going around and around on this can someone suggest a suitable replacement? A PCMCIA card is out of the question. I would need a mini PCI card to replace the intel unit. I beleive the 2915 card that people like is also an "a" card which I won't have the antenna for (nor do I have a need for 802.11a.)

Suggestions?

bigddybn...

There's a post further down "Updated Intel drivers" or something like that...
I'm sure you've probably already tried them but thought I'd point it out...

the 2200BG has never worked well for me, no matter which machine it was in.

the Dell 1450 always worked quite well for me, and right now the 9300 has an Intel 2915 in it, which seems MUCH better than the 2200bg.

I'm going to try moving the router/modem upstairs. Wondering if the filters used downstairs (since the phone and DLS line share the same jack) could be causing problems? (Although...I've never been disconnected by the phone ringing or while on the phone)
I'll see if just having the modem in the jack will help...ugh. Troubleshooting SUCKS!

Just called home and had my roommate check the phone and its a 900mhz...so I guess that's not the problem...

In my seemingly never ending search for a fix...
came across this "tool" that might help others.
I'll run this when I get home... it'll at least (I hope) tell me what channel other networks in my area are using...)
http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/

there's also an FAQ that explains what it does...

I think most people here are familiar with netstumbler. It's primarily a wardriving tool.

The problems with this card seem isolated to the card itself. Other machines work great on my home network including an HP notebook. I think the card just has issues that may or may not be driver related.

Hmm.... I'll look around for the 1450 card. Thanks for the info.

Actually I don't know what I'm thinking. I'm tryipng this on a Dell notebook at work. It has a truemobile 1300 card in it. I don't remember it giving me any problems. Will this card work with the XPS2 antenna setup?
I updated to the latest 9.0.1 driver and it works perfect. No problems here.

The wireless antennae are standardized for notebooks.

For a couple of years now, Dell has been shipping all of their notebooks with dual band antennas which are capable of 802.11b/g and 802.11a.

Possible dumb question...but just want to be sure...
Is there anything else I have to do to disable Windows mgmnt of the wireless card other than switching over to the Intel mgmnt?

It should. I think the Dell Truemobile 1350 b/g is supposed to be good too, but they didn't offer it as an option on the XPS 2.

No, just that check box. I read somewhere else that you should disable the service "Wireless Zero Config", but I tried that and couldn't get a connection at all, so all I did was uncheck the box.

Disable Windows management of the wireless connection and let Intel's Proset manage the connections. Also, turn the adapter Power Management to Manual/Maximum Performance and make sure Transmit Power is at 100%.

These work a lot better for me than Dell's Intel drivers or the newer drivers on Intel's site.

Hey Bloke I am trying this right now and uninstalling the 9.0.1, it worked perfect at my g'fs house with her Belkin router, but as soon as I got home my link sys keeps dropping me even when I am right next to it. Thanks for the info im going to keep my fingers crossed.
