I got a TEAC with my 700m, and damn is this thing loud whenever somethings loading in it. It's like theres a DJ in my laptop scratching all over the place. I'd watch DVD's on the laptop, but the drive is just too damn loud. Mine is just the DVD-ROM.

I got mine with the Combo drive: CDRW/DVD

Mine was shipped with a Toshiba i think, which was defective. Wouldn't burn and made a loud noise.

I called to have them ship me a replacement, and the replaceent was a Philips. The philips was quieter.

I also got mine with the combo drive, CDRW/DVD.

Dell sent me the Philips CDD5263. It's not particularly loud IMHO. However I obviously have nothing to compare it against.

I got a NEC 6500 DVD Burner. Very quiet operation. Very quiet.

My Phillips combo makes no unseemly noises or vibrations, when its running it feels like a Rolls Royce idling.

I noticed that the optical drive is recognized as a removable hardware in windows. The little green tray icon bothers me since it takes up space. I notice an option to hide the icon, but if I wanted to see it again how would I enable it? I don't know where to look.

right click the systray area -> properties -> click on Hide inactive icons -> customize (next to it) -> drop down menu allows you to select what to do with each of the icons

Riplock is a new scheme from the MPAA. What it does is forces the drive to the lowest read speed when reading/playing DVD movies. It does not prevent ripping , it just makes its slower to do. Makes it a nuisance. Patched firmware removes the riplock. Also removes the RPC protection, which is region protection.

There is also a bitsetting update for the 6500A
bitsetting makes the DVD+R more compatible with older dvd players, it tricks the player inot thinking the disc is a pressed DVD and not a burned DVD. Some players reject burned DVD's
